Off Track: Hawaiian Air’s picks for the best food trucks on Kauaʻi
Tsukenjo’s lunch wagon used to be at Ward and Queen
Growing up in Hawaii, we were all familiar with lunch wagon fare. Among the favorite plate lunches served were meatloaf, teriyaki steak, and stew to name a few. They served with two scoops of rice (white) and a scoop of mac salad – tossed salads came a little later. Everyone had their favorite – Tsukenjo’s, Grace’s and others known only by their location.
Somewhere in the last decade, lunch wagons evolved to food trucks. This change reflected the move toward more regional foods to reflect what was being served in restaurants like Al Wong’s, Roy’s and others.
Hawaiian Airlines recently posted an article about “Kauai Food Trucks.” As the post states, “serving up regional taste quickly, with plenty of aloha on the side.” The trucks mentioned reflect the type of food now served at “plate lunch wagons.”
