Dietary Supplements for the Heart

September 9, 2017

From the everyday Health website

Dr. Arthur Agatston: When I tell patients that they need to take one or more medications to improve their cholesterol profile, many of them ask me whether a natural, over-the-counter dietary supplement would do the job just as well.

The answer is “No.” As I mentioned earlier, because the supplement industry is not regulated by the FDA, most supplements have never undergone the rigorous scientific testing that is required for approval of a pharmaceutical product. Moreover, the research that has been performed on specific supplements — notably, antioxidants — has been very disappointing.

A handful of supplements have withstood extensive scientific review, however, and I actually do use them in my practice.
