Do You Really Need That Back Surgery?

Back-painPatients and their families presented with the prospect of back surgery should ask lots of questions, according to experts in the field. The approach to easing back pain depends upon the source, the severity, the persistence and the trajectory of the pain.

“If it’s back pain and there’s no leg pain or minimal leg pain, then a patient or a family member should know that surgery is the absolute last resort,” said Dr. Christopher Bono, an orthopedic surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and president of the North American Spine Society. “It’s most of the time not even a good option. It has a pretty mediocre-at-best success rate for the treatment of back pain.”

Bono and other surgeons recommend alternatives to surgery for patients who have nonspecific pain, from conditions such as arthritis. Physical therapy, core strengthening, weight loss and stretching to improve flexibility may each help ease the pain.

Writing a ‘Last Letter’ When You’re Healthy

Webmaster Comment: This is an emotional topic, but an action you might consider as we all age.

Over the last 15 years, as a geriatrics and palliative care doctor, I have had candid conversations with countless patients near the end of their lives. The most common emotion they express is regret: regret that they never took the time to mend broken friendships and relationships; regret that they never told their friends and family how much they care; regret that they are going to be remembered by their children as hypercritical mothers or exacting, authoritarian fathers.

The physics of how your earphone jack works (just in time to say goodbye)

ear-phonesFrom the Wired Magazine website

It doesn’t matter if you call it an earphone or headphone jack—it’s still on just about every smartphone. With rumors that Apple will kill the the earphone jack on the iPhone 7 to make it thinner, I think this is a good time to look at this surprisingly simple piece of technology.

‘Elder Orphans’ Have a Harder Time Aging in Place

Thriving in a place that’s safe and comfortable, surrounded by cozy memories, is a natural desire of older adults. We treasure independence and want a space to call our own, and we prefer that place to reflect the person we’ve become. We understand that aging bids compromise, and once 65 hits, the changes bring reminders that we’re no longer the same. We don’t move as quickly, we don’t multitask as well, nor do we easily adapt.

Those are the simple cues. As we age, the physical and mental challenges delivered through loss, immobility and dependence are the ones that put us at higher risks.

The Best Diet to Prevent Stroke

stroke-5You may know a stroke happens when oxygen-rich blood is blocked from getting to part of your brain, but did you know your level of risk for a stroke is related to your diet? Every 30 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke, and someone dies from a stroke every 4 minutes, according to the National Stroke Association.

For stroke prevention, choose a well-balanced, healthful diet, placing the emphasis on natural, whole, and unprocessed foods. “Everything we do to reduce the risk of heart attack is also going to reduce the risk of stroke,” says Seth Baum, MD, a cardiologist and founder of Preventive Cardiology in Boca Raton, Florida. A healthy diet will help you avoid high blood pressure and high cholesterol — negative influences that increase your risk of stroke. Here are diet tips from protein sources to potassium needs that can help you prevent a stroke.
