Facing a shortage of pilots, dollars, and training time, the Pentagon wants private pilots and fighter jets to play the bad guys during dogfighting and other drills with military pilots.
While contractors have long been used in various kinds of military training, top Defense Department officials believe this new role could free up uniformed pilots to fly in combat squadrons.
The “golden years” aren’t what they used to be — they’re getting even better, thanks to advances in medicine and nutrition. And because of this headway, the United States is experiencing an unprecedented increase in its senior population.
By 2030, 1 in every 5 Americans will be age 65 or older, and the average life expectancy has passed 80 years for women and 75 years for men. But that doesn’t mean those run-of-the-mill senior health threats (such as osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s) are going away.
On the contrary: It’s more important than ever to keep your bones, belly, and brain in tip-top shape. Your first step? Know which common conditions — and symptoms — to watch out for, so you can take steps to prevent or treat them.

In 1865, William Booth, a British ordained minister with the Methodist New Connection formed an evangelical group which preached to people living in poverty within London’s East End. In addition to preaching the Gospel, Booth became involved in the feeding and shelter of the hungry, the homeless and the rehabilitation of those with alcohol addiction. Soon they were tagged, ‘Soap, Soup and Salvation Army.’ Booth’s original ‘Christian Mission’ became The Salvation Army in 1878 when it became modeled after the military structure.
Omega-3 fatty acids, the “good fat” found in fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel, and sardines, can help lower your risk of dying, according to a 2013 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health found that people with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood — levels maintained by eating fish at least twice per week — lived for 2.2 years longer, on average, than people with low levels of omega-3s.
But eating fish can do more than extend your life — it can improve the quality of that life, too. Here are six ways eating fish and omega-3 fatty acids can help you live a better, healthier life.
French President François Hollande on Thursday confirmed that a National Guard would be formed from existing reserve forces to better protect citizens facing terror attacks.
A “defence council” to be held early next month will hammer out the force’s hierarchy and command structure, Hollande’s office said in a statement.

One in 10 Americans has experienced ringing in the ears, a condition called tinnitus, and that is likely the result of prolonged exposure to loud noises, new research suggests.
Of those who were struck by tinnitus, only 36 percent said they had it constantly, however.
Tinnitus is characterized by hearing sounds when there are none. The sounds can be perceived as ringing, buzzing, crickets or hissing. For those who struggle with it on a daily basis, the noise is so bothersome that it interferes with thinking, emotions, hearing, sleep and concentration, the researchers said.
Some countries in Africa, the Pacific Islands, and Asia have reported Zika in the past and may continue to occasionally report new cases. The risk to travelers in these endemic countries is likely much lower than it is in countries with Zika epidemics (see Q&A: Zika Risk in Countries with Endemic Zika). Because Zika infection in a pregnant woman causes severe birth defects, pregnant women should consult with their health care provider and, if they decide to travel, strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites.
Travel notices have not been issued for these destinations but would be considered if the number of cases rises to the level of an outbreak. Check this page for the most up-to-date information before you make travel plans.
Many people need to take a combination of medications to effectively treat their hypertension. While some blood pressure medicines work by removing extra fluid and salt from your body to lower blood pressure, others slow down your heartbeat or relax and widen blood vessels.
For many people, taking more than one medication in low doses is more effective in treating hypertension than taking larger doses of one single drug. Sometimes your doctor may need to try different combinations of drugs before determining which is best for you.
Depending on your body, medical history, and severity of hypertension, your doctor may recommend one or more of the following medications.
