Remember Everyone Deployed
The mission of RedShirtFridays.org is to show support for our servicemen and servicewomen. We are not a political organization. We do not care whether or not one supports or does not support our nation’s specific military missions.
We care only about making our support of our servicemen and servicewomen known to our fellow Americans and the world. We are a silent majority that does not wish to remain silent anymore.
We wish to let our servicemen and servicewomen know we support their sacrifice and that we will not forget them; we will do this by wearing Red every Friday

Remember when you got your first gray hair or noticed that first little crinkle around your eye? It wasn’t a milestone marked with the same enthusiasm as, say, losing your first baby tooth. But whether we like it or not, our bodies show signs of aging as we march through our 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond. Some difficulties (such as bone-density loss or substantial hearing impairment) are more serious than others (like minor memory lapses). Still, almost all are, to some degree, correctable. Read on to find out how you can successfully manage common age-related health issues — and enjoy a longer, healthier life.

In the first installment of our series Flight Mode, we visit Delta mission control, where 300 people watch thousands of planes to keep everything running smoothly.
The world’s busiest airport isn’t in the world’s biggest city. It’s in Atlanta, a great southern city that by dint of accident and capitalism sits, metaphorically speaking, at the center of the map.
More than 2,500 flights carrying 250,000 passengers pass through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International each day, headed to or coming from 225 cities around the world. Delta, which carries more passengers than any other airline, accounts for 75 percent of that traffic.
In the first episode of WIRED’s Flight Mode, we take you into Delta’s “mission control,” where nearly 300 people track every one of the 5,000 aircraft in the airline’s fleet.

Anyone with even the faintest love of airplanes invariably pauses while boarding to peer into the cockpit. This small ritual invariably frustrates the impatient passengers waiting to board, but such people simply cannot resist glimpsing that mesmerizing sea of dials, switches, and levers.
You’d better hope you never share a flight with Donald Nijboer, because he’s obsessed with cockpits. After reading his amazing book, Fighting Cockpits: In the Pilot’s Seat of Great Military Aircraft from World War I to Today, you will be too. It’s packed with wonderful photos by Dan Patterson, amazing details, and insightful comments from pilots who’ve flown everything from the Sopwith Camel to the B-17 to the long-awaited F-35.
These photos let you peek into the cockpit without worrying about ticking off everyone behind you.
A large number of studies have shown that moderate alcohol intake can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in men and women. Moderate drinking means one drink per day for women and one to two for men, says Donald Novey, MD, an integrative medicine physician with the Advocate Medical Group in Park Ridge, Ill. “The difference in amounts is because of how men and women metabolize alcohol,” Dr. Novey explains.
“When you say one drink, the size of that drink matters,” Novey adds.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture one drink is equal to:
+ 12 ounces of beer or
+ 5 ounces of wine or
+ 1½ ounces of spirits (hard liquor such as gin or whiskey, 80-proof)
When Social Security payments form the backbone of your monthly budget — as they do for many retirees — it would be nice to accurately anticipate how much you’ll get.
Unfortunately, that’s just not the case. In a survey released Thursday from Nationwide Retirement Institute, 29 percent of retirees say their benefit ended up being less or much less than expected.
All adults should know their lipid levels — that is, the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in their blood.
High cholesterol is a known risk factor for heart disease. To properly assess their risk, adults should get cholesterol checks once every five years starting at age 20, according to the National Institutes of Health’s National Cholesterol Education Program guidelines.

This week, Google security researcher Tavis Ormandy announced that he’d found numerous critical vulnerabilities in Symantec’s entire suite of anti-virus products. That’s 17 Symantec enterprise products in all, and eight Norton consumer and small-business products. The worst thing about Symantec’s woes? They’re just the latest in a long string of serious vulnerabilities uncovered in security software.

We celebrate the Declaration of Independence for two reasons. It represents an official severing of ties between the original 13 colonies and the rule of Great Britain. But it also represents the core of our beliefs, the very makeup of our identity as citizens of the U.S. Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, combined a rich a history of ideas and eloquently presented them to the then King of Great Britain along with a list of grievances.
