Tanker Takes First Night Flight

The Air Force’s next generation tanker flew at night for the first time this week, Boeing announced in a tweet Monday. The jet, EMD-4, took off the evening of April 30 from Boeing Field, south of Seattle, and flew a three-hour flight to test the jet’s night exterior lighting, Boeing spokesman Charles Ramey said.

The Air Force now has all four test aircraft for the KC-46 program, but it’s still relying on the aircraft it will replace for flight tests. The new tankers have successfully conducted refueling tests, but are not yet cleared to refuel, so KC-135 Stratotankers fly alongside the test aircraft to refuel receiver and chase aircraft, according to an Air Mobility Command release.

While chase aircraft approach the KC-46’s boom to test wake turbulence, the KC-135 is on standby to refuel both aircraft. “When we weren’t flying, we were on cockpit alert status as a backup,” Maj. Jason Barry, 350th Air Refueling Squadron instructor evaluator pilot, said in the release. “We watched all the testing that was done while in formation, listening on the radio to directives and refueling both aircraft as they needed it.”

In ancient times, the central plateau, particularly the area called Lihue on the southwestern part of the plateau, was a center of island political power.

Even after the royal center had shifted to Waikiki during the time of chief Maʻilikukahi, this central area continued to play a role in chiefly activities, especially related to Kukaniloko, the site where chiefs came for the birth of their royal children. (Army)

As late as 1797, Kamehameha is said to have “made every arrangement to have the accouchement (birth of his successor) take place at Kūkaniloko; but the illness of Queen Keōpūolani frustrated the design”. (Fornander)

MedicareCard_Header

In the mid-1800s, beyond Honolulu’s limits there were few residences. The population was growing toward and up Nuʻuanu, but Honolulu was hemmed on the Diamond Head end by the barren plains called Kulaokahuʻa.

Kulaokahu‘a translates as “the plain of the boundary.” Kulaokahu‘a was the comparatively level ground below Makiki Valley (between the mauka fertile valleys and the makai wetlands.) This included areas such as Kaka‘ako, Kewalo, Makiki, Pawaʻa and Mōʻiliʻili.

Military hiring a rapid cyber response team in case commissaries get hacked

DeCAMilitary base grocery stores are vulnerable to computer hackers, according to the Pentagon, which says it needs private cyber forensics investigators on call. If a payment system breach were to occur, the team would respond within an hour.

The Defense Commissary Agency, essentially a global quick mart and supermarket chain, is in the process of hiring “computer incident response services” for its 250 shops.

The agency, also called DeCA, is worried about joining the likes of, among other hacked chains, Supervalu, 7-Eleven and Chick-fil-A — whose $5 billion annual sales rival the agency’s.
