New TRICARE fees delayed, military health system would be reorganized under bill

Thanks to Gordon Lau for sharing this article

TRICARE Logo

Broad changes could be coming to TRICARE and the military health system under legislation being drafted by the House Armed Services Committee, but active-duty personnel and current retirees wouldn’t see the immediate hits to their wallets that were proposed earlier this year in the Pentagon’s fiscal 2017 budget.

Under draft legislation to be revealed Monday House lawmakers will propose to overhaul the military health system and Tricare health plans to maintain the “medical readiness of the force,” now and in the future, according to the HASC staff.

Off Track: Yick Lung

From the Images of Old Hawaii website

yick lungReportedly, Yee Sheong and Kam Tai Leong arrived in the Islands in 1898 and founded Yickco in 1900 and operated under the tradename of Yick Lung. Yick Lung, which means ‘profitable enterprise’ in Cantonese, was primarily a candy company and was subsequently operated by a couple generations of the family. A featured item was ‘Li Hing Mui – ‘Li Hing’ means ‘traveling’ while ‘Mui’ means ‘plum.’ Daughter, Gertrude Yee, is attributed with coming up with the name Li Hing Mui for the sun-dried, salty-sweet plum. Unfortunately, parent company Yickco Inc filed for bankruptcy in 1996 and was dissolved in 1998.

10 Surprising Alzheimer’s Predictors

alzheimer10About 5.2 million Americans currently suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, and the aging population will drive that number to an estimated 7.1 million by 2025, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Researchers have identified several types of brain abnormalities in people with the disease, notably plaques made of clumps of beta-amyloid protein and tangles of a protein called tau. Both correlate with the death of brain cells, leading to progressive memory loss, dwindling social skills and, eventually, death.

As Dr. Marwan Sabbagh, director of the Banner Sun Health Research Institute and co-author of “The Alzheimer’s Prevention Cookbook,” puts it, Alzheimer’s memory loss goes beyond the usual “I forgot where I put my keys” to “I forgot what my keys are for.” Age, family history, having the Apolipoprotein E genotype and being female are the leading predictors of the disease. But researchers are finding other predictive correlations, especially in lifestyle.

Here Are the Best and Worst Airlines in the U.S.

united airlinesLife’s too short to board miserable flights. That doesn’t mean plenty of us don’t. In fact, for the average $500 per ticket we spend on airfare, Americans get increasingly little in return. Some flights are worse than others though…

The truth is that not all airlines are created equal. Some try harder, some cut more corners and a few introduce raw sewage to the flying experience. The trouble for travelers is that just browsing horror stories isn’t enough to make sure the same won’t happen to them.

How can you tell the difference between a fluke and a careless carrier? How can you tell if that great price is the result of good management or the death of customer service? With a top ten list of course.

The folks over at WalletHub have put together their list of the five best, and the five worst, of the largest carriers in the American skies.

After those two visits have been used, beneficiaries can continue to use urgent care as long as they receive a referral.

You’ll soon have to start paying up to avoid the middle seat

DCF 1.0

There aren’t many fates worse than getting stuck than the middle seat on an airplane. Body odors, arguments, even bits of stale cheese all seem to roll downhill into the benighted center. For a flier already accustomed to the barrage of small indignities justified in the name of budget cuts, fighting over the armrests with a pair of strangers can be the last straw.
