Check Six – June 1995: 154th Support Group Training Bulletin

The following items were in the “In My Opinion” column in the June 1995 issue of the 154th Support Group Training Bulletin. Unit designations and ranks are as they were in 1995.

Three 154th Support Group members met their promotions boards during the May UTA weekend.

MSgt John Botelho, 154th Mission Support Flight.  John was the “owner” of the Military Personnel Flight’s computer.  MSgt Botelho now is a member of the 154th Communications Flight.

TSgt Angie Fleenor, 154th Mission Support Flight.  Angie worked in the IM function and her office was in the old mailroom in the hanger. Angie retired and relocated to the continent.

TSgt Derek Gaboya, 154th Civil Engineer Squadron. Derek was a Traditional Guardmember who always did a super job.

The Hawaii National Guard Association named Capt Jeff Wachter, 169th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron as the Outstanding Officer for 1995. The presentation was at the HNGA’s annual conference in May. Several days later, Jeff and a small group of the 169 ACWS members departed for an extended deployment in Saudi Arabia.

MSgt Colosse Eliapo, Jr., Hq 154th Group represented the State Department of Defense as the department’s nominee as the State Employee of the Year in the Professional area.  Colosse passed away earlier this year.

TSgt Mark Ueunten, Communications Flight deployed with the 203d Air Refueling Squadron to Keflavic, Iceland. The 154th Wing’s KC-135Rs stood alert in support of the Icelandic Defense Forces and Mark documented activities as the video cameraman.

MSgt Stanley Heu, 154th Maintenance Squadron, and MSgt Annarene Blair, 201 Combat Communications Group just graduated from the Air Force Senior NCO Academy residence course.  A very notable achievement for Stan and Anna because there were not too many slots for Guardmembers 20 years ago.

The Honolulu Police Department named SMSgt Gerald Minami, 154th Medical Squadron as their Reserve Police Officer of the Year.  Between his regular job and serving in the Guard, Gerald still found time to serve as a reserve officer.

The 11 most game-changing aircraft of the 21st century

Today’s most sophisticated aircraft are the stuff of science fiction.

In a few years, drones that can fit in the palm of a person’s hand and 117-foot-wingspan behemoths capable of launching satellites into space will both be a reality.

At the same time, drone and advanced fighter technologies will spread beyond the US and Europe, and countries like China, Russia, and Iran may have highly advanced aerial capabilities.

Here’s our look at the most game-changing aircraft of the past few years — and the next few to come.

Three weeks after one of the most infamous prison escapes in New York history, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has declined to request help from the 174th Attack Wing and its military surveillance drones in tracking two escaped killers, military officials say.

The MQ-9 Reaper drones in Syracuse – some of the most sophisticated surveillance aircraft in the military’s arsenal – continue to operate training missions over the Adirondacks and Northern New York where they can loiter for at least 27 hours without refueling.

Scientists Find Link Between Birth Month And Disease Risk

Scientists may make fun of astrologers for saying that your birth month exerts a profound effect on your personality and direction in life, but a new study finds them singing a similar refrain.

Data scientists at Columbia University Medical Center uncovered a surprising correlation between the month you’re born and your risk of developing various health problems, including heart disease, viral infections and ADHD.

While the idea that your birth month can predict your health destiny might seem outlandish, the scientific community has welcomed the findings.

Low Sugar Or Low Carb: Which Is Really Healthier For You?

On the face of it, low-sugar and low-carb diets seem similar: Sugars are carbs, after all, and most carbs get broken down into sugar (glucose) during digestion. Both diets also call for cutting back on processed foods. But ask a doctor or nutritionist which plan to follow, and it’s a safe bet you’ll be told that low sugar is best — specifically, low added sugar.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

America’s Least Healthy Fast-Food Chains

Sonic, according to a 24/7 Wall St. analysis, is the least healthy major fast-food restaurant in the United States.

24/7 Wall St. analyzed nutritional information for each of the country’s largest fast-food restaurants based on publicly available nutritional information for each chains menu. Specifically, we examined the levels of saturated fat, trans fat, sodium, carbohydrates, sugars, and calories in each menu item and compared them to the typical levels found at the nation’s most popular fast-food chains. More menu items exceeding those levels resulted in a lower rank. Based on our rank, these are the least healthy fast-food restaurants in the country.

OPM ‘not comfortable’ yet admitting 18 million had data stolen

If the number rises to 18 million, it will include more Federal retirees, and those with security clearance investigation paperwork on file.

Family Emergency Communication Plan

New-NPC-Banner

You may not be with your family when a disaster strikes so it’s important to make your family communication plans now. Do you know how you will get to a safe place, how you will contact each other, and how you will get back together?

Creating a family emergency communication plan will help keep everyone accounted for during an emergency. Download and complete the Ready campaign’s Family Emergency Communications Plan for Parents and Kids today! Fill out the documents online and print or email to family and friends.

Ready also offers these tips to make communicating during a disaster easier:

+ Identify a contact such as a friend or relative who lives out-of-state for household members to notify that they are safe;

+ Be sure every member of your family knows the phone number and has a cell phone, coins (for a pay phone), or prepaid phone card to call the emergency contact;

+ Teach family members how to use text messaging. Text messages can often get around network disruptions when phone calls might not go through; and

+ Subscribe to local emergency alert services. Sign up through your local Office of Emergency Management.

For more information about emergency alerts, review the Be Smart. Know Your Alerts and Warnings guide from America’s PrepareAthon!
