Smartphone thefts plummet after kill switch introduction

The number of thefts and robberies of smartphones, particularly iPhones, is on the fall in New York, London and San Francisco, according to data to be released Wednesday.

Law enforcement officials, who have been at the forefront of demands to include a “kill switch” in all smartphones, hailed the news as proof that the technology is working as a deterrent.

Panel Unsure of Change to TRICARE

TRICARE Logo

A commission’s recommendation that TRICARE be abolished in favor of a system that offers more choice was questioned last week by Democrats on the House Armed Services Committee. The Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission included the change to the veterans’ health-care provider among its 15 recommendations unveiled Jan. 29.

Stephen Buyer, a commission member and former Republican House member from Indiana, defended the idea saying TRICARE has “diminished in its value” because too few providers sign on to it, according to The Hill. He said, for example, only 12 orthopedic providers near Fort Bragg, N.C., accept TRICARE, but 163 accept Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Rep. Mark Takai, D-Hawaii, a member of the Hawaii Army National Guard and Iraq veteran, said replacing TRICARE “sounds like it’s going to cost a lot more money.” Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., the ranking member of the committee, failed to get an answer when he pressed commission members about out-of-pocket costs for veterans under a private insurer.

Another Democrat, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, also a member of the Hawaii Guard, said she is open to any plan that would increase access to health care.

Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, the committee chairman, said after the hearing that health care “is one of the most complex areas we deal with, so taking some time to study the effects of a change in health care is, to me, the biggest challenge ahead of us as we look at these recommendations.”

Is the Advice on Fat in Your Diet Wrong?

800px-Melting_Butter

For years we’ve been told to eat a low-fat diet to protect ourselves from heart disease.

But a new report says those guidelines — which recommend keeping fat to 30% or less of daily calories and saturated fat to 10% or less — were not backed by solid research when they were first issued decades ago.

The report’s authors even say dietary advice “should not have been introduced” at all.

U.S. public health officials made the recommendation in 1977, and 6 years later those in the U.K. did the same, in efforts to curb heart attacks and heart disease.

Retiree Updates

Karen Stender, a Hawai‘i Army National Guard retiree signed up with Retiree News a few weeks ago. She is back in Hawai‘i after many years in the Northwest. She said, “I’m still in awe with all the changes that have taken place… the rail, the high prices for homes etc.” Thanks for signing up for Retiree News!

Jerry Matsuda, a Hawai‘i Air National Guard retiree, who served as the Engineering Officer for the State Department of Defense. He continues to work for AECOM, an international integrated infrastructure and support services firm.

Jerry mentioned that his son, Lieutenant Colonel Reid Matsuda — also an engineering officer — just took command of the Air Reserve’s 624th Civil Engineer Squadron at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Jerry must be a proud father!

Another opportunity to serve

Air Education and Training Command (AETC) is looking at injecting reserve component fighter pilots, or even civilian instructors, into the introduction to fighter fundamentals course to ease USAF’s fighter pilot shortage. “I have three squadrons of IFF that are 100 percent fighter-pilot manned,” AETC boss Gen. Robin Rand said at AFA’s Air Warfare Symposium, February 13. “I think we can take a look at that blend again—Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, and using the model that we already have in other places in the command of bringing some civilians in,” he added.

The Air Force also is looking to top-up its under-manned ROTC detachment cadres with the same mix. “ROTC detachments are typically now manned at 66 percent—there’s no more juice to squeeze to get Active Duty manning,” Rand explained in Orlando. He said he is working on a proposal to get Guard and Reserve leaders who “want to motivate young men and women” in addition to bringing back retired service members who want to “come back and be one of our cadre,” Rand said.

How To Identify Tricare On Tax Forms

TRICARE Logo

This Obamacare requirement includes Tricare Standard and Tricare for Life, two programs Guard members qualify for in retirement.

Ever since my colleague Amy Bushatz wrote about Tricare users needing to tick the correct box on their 2014 federal income tax forms to reflect that fact that they have Tricare health insurance, her mailbox has been out of control with questions on how to do this.

The new Affordable Care Act has a provision that penalizes taxpayers who do not have health insurance and choose not to purchase health insurance via the new health care exchanges.  These penalties are happening via the federal income tax return.  If you have qualified health insurance, then you show that on your tax return.  Unfortunately, the line is small, the labelling is poor, and the instructions are slim.
