Where Do Under-Eye Circles Come From?

Dark circles under the eyes are not always associated with lack of sleep or being tired. Because the skin in this area is relatively thin, dark circles usually reflect the status of the tissue underneath, such as any congestion of local vessels and blood flow. For patients with water retention problems (such as those with kidney failure), any abrupt change in the fluid content in that area may cause changes in the color of the under-eye skin, leading to dark circles.
