Scammers calling residents about lawsuit

September 17, 2014

HPD patch

The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) has received many reports about scammers calling residents and telling them that they are being sued in a lawsuit. The call usually originates from a 202 area code number. The scammer has the victim’s name, address, and sometimes, other personal information. The caller tells the victim that they can settle this lawsuit with a payment that is sent to another victim before it is forwarded to the caller. If ignored, the scammer tells the victim that he/she may be subject to arrest by local or federal authorities, including HPD.

If you receive a similar call, please be aware that lawsuits are not settled with payments over the phone, and law enforcement does not get involved in civil cases unless directed by the judge.

The HPD would like to remind residents to never give out personal information or money to strangers. If you or someone you know has been a victim, please contact HPD at (808) 529-3111.
