Check Six: Stairway to Heaven

A lot of residents and tourists have done the Stairway to Heaven hike over the years. The view at the top is awesome and is worth the challenges on the way up.

The stairs closed for renovation and unfortunately before it reopened, it became a point of contention between hikers and area residents. In addition, sections of the stairs washed away during heavy rains making it very dangerous.

But the stairway and a few of the buildings remaining have a military connection. The Navy built the stairs leading to a radio facility during World War II. Later, the Coast Guard converted it into an OMEGA station.
