Check Six: Guard Olympians and the Outrigger Canoe Club
In researching a Hawaii Guard connection to the Olympics, there were two Hawaii Air National Guard members were Olympians. Both had strong ties to the Outrigger Canoe Club and were selected as a member of the prestigious Winged ”O”, the OCC’s highest award. Since its inception in 1968, only 50 members have become Winged ”O” members.
The Outrigger Canoe Club’s Winged “O” was founded in 1968 to pay tribute to the Club’s finest sportsmen. Winged “O” is not just an honor bestowed on the Club’s top athletes; with being named a Winged “O” comes a lifelong obligation to actively preserve the athletic purpose of the Club.
The commitment is carried out by Winged “O” members through continued participation in Club sports, coaching, serving on the Club’s Athletic Committees, raising funds when necessary, and planning for the Club’s continued participation in athletic endeavors.
Retiree News will feature these two Olympians over the next few days.
