Congratulations to Gerald Silva. Governor David Ige nominated him to a term on the Hawai’i Advisory Council on Emergency Management. This term runs to June 30, 2022. Originally established in 1951, the Advisory Council serves as a resource to the Governor and the Director of Emergency Management on emergency management topics and concerns.

Gerry retired as the Hawaii Army National Guard Chief of Staff in late 1994. Later, he served with Mayor Jeremy Harris’ administration. From 2005-2010, he was the Chief Operating Officer of ‘Olelo Community Media. He currently finishing an 8-year tenure as the Volunteer State President of AARP Hawaii.

Obituaries – Taps.  Advertiser seriously limited information in their obituaries a few years ago, making them basically death notices. This drives the family to buy a “family placed obituary”. Several Retiree News follows emailed about the following death notice that posted on April 8.

Norman Kam Chew Hu, 73, of Honolulu, HI, died in Honolulu on January 28, 2018. He was born in Honolulu, HI. Private Service.

We suspect this is Norman Hu, the retiree Hawaii Air National Guard recruiter. Rest in Peace.

Another State Veterans Home. Recently the Department of Veterans Affairs announced that it will use $685 million in funding from Congress to fund several State Veterans Home construction projects through the VA State Veterans Home Construction Grant Program. Hawaii will be one of the states receiving funding.

The State Veterans Home Construction Grant Program provides up to 65 percent of the cost to build and renovate facilities. Hawaii plans to continue its long journey toward an Oahu facility, similar to the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo.
