The P-51 Mustangs, pictured above, became F-51s in the fledgling United States Air Force.
In the Hawaii Air National Guard, the P-47N Thunderbolt or “Jug,” flown by the 199th Fighter Squadron became the F-47N Thunderbolt. The HIANG flew the F-47s until November 12, 1953, with the introduction of the first T-33. In 1954, the unit received its first F-86E “Sabre” jet.
