Reminder: 10-digit dialing starts in October

September 1, 2021

Starting October 24, 2021, you’ll need to use the 808 area code for every number you call in Hawaii, even if you’re calling the house next door.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted 988 as a new three-digit number to be used to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline starting July 16, 2022. In order for 988 to work, all service providers nationwide must implement mandatory 10-digit local dialing.

Therefore, starting October 24 all calls, including those on the same island, will require that you dial area code 808 + telephone number. All telecommunications carriers and VoIP service providers are required to take part in the initiative.
