7 Popular Supplements With Hidden Dangers

From the Everyday Health website

When it comes to supplements, there’s so much hype about their potential benefits that it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. While it’s true that vitamins and minerals are essential to health, it’s not true that taking them in pill, capsule, or powder form — especially in megadoses — is necessary, or without risks.

For one thing, dietary supplements can sometimes interact with each other, as well as with over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medication. In addition, unlike drugs, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is not authorized to review dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed. It’s up to manufacturers to ensure that their products do not contain contaminants or impurities, are properly labeled, and contain what they claim. In other words, the regulation of dietary supplements is much less strict than it is for prescription or OTC drugs.

18 States With Scary Death Taxes

From the Kiplinger website

Most people shouldn’t be afraid of federal “death taxes.” For 2021, only estates worth $11.7 million or more ($23.4 million or more for a married couple) are slashed by federal estate taxes, and only a small percentage of Americans have accumulated that much wealth. Plus, there’s no federal inheritance tax to spook your heirs. (Estate taxes are paid by the estate and based on the estate’s overall value, while inheritance taxes are paid by an individual heir on whatever property they inherit.)

But don’t feel too comfy if your assets are below the federal estate tax threshold—a tax bill from your state could be lurking in the shadows. While a number of states have reduced or eliminated their death taxes over the past decade or so to dissuade well-off retirees from moving to more tax-friendly jurisdictions, 12 states and the District of Columbia still impose an estate tax and six states have an inheritance tax on the books. (Maryland has both!)

So if you don’t know boo about death taxes and live in one of the states listed (alphabetically) below, beware. Your heirs could be haunted by a state tax collector. Hawai‘i is on the list!

USAF Approves Moving F-22 Training to Langley Following Environmental Study

From the Air Force Magazine website

U.S. Air Force photograph

The Air Force has approved Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., as the new location for F-22 training following the completion of an environmental impact study.

The announcement is another step in the long process of moving Raptor training, which shifted across Florida from Tyndall Air Force Base to Eglin Air Force Base after a massive hurricane in 2018. But while the study and approval mark a crucial step in the process, the move is not official just yet. Air Combat Command said it is still waiting on service leadership to finish its study into tactical aviation requirements, determining which and how many tactical aircraft it wants in the fleet moving forward. Once that is done, the Air Force will make the final decisions on the move.

SIGNIFICANCE

Ultramarine blue and Air Force yellow are the Air Force colors.  Blue alludes to the sky, the primary theater of Air Force operations.  Yellow refers to the sun and the excellence required of Air Force personnel.  The key and knights chess piece symbolize intelligence and the steersman’s paddle signifies guidance.  The eight stars relate to the three Air Force Core Values, the two Hawaii Air National Guard values and the work, knowledge, power, theme of the motto.  The Hawaiian motto, “MA KA ‘IKE KA MANA,” translates to “IN KNOWLEDGE THERE IS POWER” in English.

The 201st Intelligence Squadron operates out of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hicakam. The unit’s primary focus is to gather, analyze and interpret information from a variety of sources to allow leaders to make the necessary decisions to protect and defend the national interests of the United States. Through combined research, Air National Guard intelligence specialists create databases of information and materials to support combat mission planning and ensure our airmen are aware of enemy resources and abilities.

Off the Hawaii Air National Guard Facebook page

Hawaii Air National Guard photograph

Air Force Security Forces personnel are renowned for their far-reaching impacts in maintaining safety and security. Through their efforts, operations, military bases, and task forces are afforded the peace-of-mind and operational latitude needed to accomplish the mission knowing that these security professionals have got their backs. So when seven 154th Security Forces Airmen receive recognition for their exemplary efforts while conduction security operations in support of Capitol Police at the United States Capitol from March 12 to May 23, it’s really no surprise. Still, it’s a big deal and we couldn’t be more proud of these remarkable defenders.

Congratulations to these 154th Security Forces Airmen. SMSgt Ryan Schreiner, SSgt. Rodney Pedro and Bryan Tenoso, SrA Ken Anthony Cabreros, and A1C Jacob James, Hunter Johnson, and Sheldon Goya who received Air Force and Army medals for their meritorious actions which significantly contributed to Team Hawaii’s mission objectives and enhanced the overall success of Task Force Capitol in Washington D.C..

Will vs. Trust: Know the Differences

From the Nerd Wallet website

Wills and trusts are legal instruments that ensure assets are passed down to heirs as per your wishes, helping to provide for the people and causes close to your heart. While each can be a pillar of estate planning, wills and trusts have key differences to consider, from when they take effect to whether or how much they can be contested. Depending upon your situation, you might need only one or the other, but some people end up using both to help achieve different outcomes.
