Check Six – 1970s: UTA Celebrations

Hawaii Air National Guard photograph

In the 1970s and 80s, Unit Training Assemblies (UTAs) were filled with a heavy flying schedule with a lot of ground training. Occasionally, there was a special ceremony – like a change of command or a senior leader retirement. These ceremonies usually involved a group formation outside Building 3400.

Some of these ceremonies were followed by a party inside the hanger. Additionally, there were group wide parties hosted by Guardmembers who were recently promoted.

Guardmembers in this photograph include Donald Ho, Steven Oka, Allen Mizumoto, Norman Chang, Arthur Ishimoto.

25 Things to Do When You Retire

From the U.S. News & World Report website

Try these retirement ideas to keep your second act exciting.

After decades in the workforce, retirees finally get complete control over how they spend their time. There are many terrific things you can do with your time and energy in retirement.

Here’s what to do in retirement:

Why notifying DFAS about life-changing events is important

Concerning your Military (DFAS) Retired & Annuitant Pay

One of the reasons we ask you to check and update your retired pay account is because the Survivor Benefit Plan has a number of important one-year deadlines.

If you get married, lose a spouse, or have a child, and you don’t notify DFAS within the one-year deadline, you may be barred from covering your loved one.

When you notify us, be sure to include supporting documents, such as birth or marriage certificates.

As a retiree, the sooner you alert us to any change that might affect your pay or your SBP coverage, the more timely and accurate payments will be.  Keeping your account up to date includes making sure your mailing address, email address, banking information, and your beneficiaries are current.

Find out more about updating your Survivor Benefit Plan beneficiaries on our website: http://go.usa.gov/xftby

How much the average American will get from Social Security when they retire

From the CNBC website

The median weekly pay for U.S. workers was $957 at the start of 2020.

That works out to an annual salary of $49,764. If the money came from a traditional job, 6.2% of your salary or about $3,085 would go toward Social Security taxes. That sum is then matched by employers.

Lualualei / Naval Magazine Pearl Harbor

From the Images of Old Hawaii website

In 1921, Congress designated 2,000-acres at Lualualei for Hawaiian Homelands. Then, in the early-1930s, Territorial Governor Judd, through Executive Orders, granted all but 475-acres to the US Navy. (This removed a chunk of land from Hawaiian Homelands.)

The Navy has used Lualualei as an ammunition depot (initially Naval Ammunition Depot Oʻahu, now Naval Magazine Pearl Harbor) and a communications facility (Lualualei Naval Radio Transmitting Facility) since 1934.

Retirement Checklist: Maximize Savings Through Every Decade of Your Life

From the Next Advisor website

Americans of all ages often dream about retirement, but most struggle to actually save for it.

Let’s face it, in the shuffle of immediate priorities, saving and planning for retirement isn’t a walk in the park. We all know we need to save for the future, but more than half of Americans don’t know how much they’ll need to comfortably retire. And 15% of Americans are without retirement savings at all, according to Northwestern Mutual’s 2019 Planning and Progress Study.

“Unfortunately, if you don’t save and don’t do what you need to do for retirement, then you’re going to be forced into a position where retirement may not be in your future, and you may have to work for the better part of your life,” says Larry Sprung, CFP, president and founder of Mitlin Financial in Hauppauge, New York.

When life happens, it can sabotage your retirement savings. But planning for retirement doesn’t have to be daunting; there are plenty of things you can start doing right now to end up with the retirement you envision.

Telehealth Skyrocketing Among Older Adults

From the Health Day website

More older Americans have been seeing their doctors virtually since the pandemic began than ever before, a new poll finds.

During the first three months of the pandemic, one in four patients over 50 years of age used telehealth — way up from the 4% who did so in 2019.

Comfort levels with telemedicine have also risen, the researchers said. In 2019, most older people had at least one concern about telemedicine, but by mid-2020, the number of those with concerns dropped, especially among people who had a virtual visit between March and June.

Check Six: F-102 Delta Dagger Cockpit

A familiar cockpit view of the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger flown by the 199th Fighter Squadron.

On 1 December 1960, the 199th was authorized to expand to a group level, and the 154th Fighter-Interceptor Group was established by the National Guard Bureau. The 199th FIS becoming the group’s flying squadron. Other squadrons assigned into the group were the 154th Headquarters, 154th Material Squadron (Maintenance), 154th Combat Support Squadron, and the 154th USAF Dispensary.

Along with the change to Group status, on 7 December the Hawaiian Air National Guard began receiving Mach-1 F-102 Delta Dagger interceptors eventually 29 F-102s were received. This was in line with the policy of equipping ANG units with one generation of aircraft behind the active-duty Air Defense Command forces. For the next sixteen years, the 154th FIG operated the Delta Daggers establishing an excellent safety record. In December 1961, The new Hawaii Air National Guard (HANG) complex was completed and consisted of 60 acres. The land was originally part of Fort Kamehameha and had been acquired in 1960 by permit from the U.S. Army to the Hawaii ANG.

The 154th flew the Delta Dagger throughout the 1960s, and although the Hawaii ANG was not activated during the Vietnam War, several of its pilots volunteered for combat duty in Southeast Asia. The group was the longest user of the interceptor, being equipped with the F-102 long after most of its Air National Guard counterparts were upgraded to the F-106. (Wikipedia)
