Check Six: F-4C Phantom on the 154th Wing Flightline – 40 years ago

This photograph, taken in 1980, shows a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II on the 154th Wing flightline. The 199th Fighter Squadron flew Phantoms from 1976-1987. On the cart are AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-7 Sparrow missiles.

Actual missile firings were restricted to specific training ranges. The weapons loader crews uploading missiles before a training flight and later downloaded them with the aircraft returned. A never ending job.

DoD Miscalculated Savings of Proposed Commissary-Exchange Merger, Watchdog Says

The federal government’s accounting agency has taken issue with the cost estimates used by the Defense Department to support a proposed merger of its commissary system with the military’s three separate exchange services.

In a report ordered by Congress last year and released Thursday by the Government Accountability Office, GAO analysts found fault with several underlying premises of a business case analysis done by a Pentagon task force on consolidating the military’s resale store systems.

Webmaster comment: Since the start, exchanges are resisting the merger plan with the faltering commissaries. The four exchanges systems are making money and improving their online presence. Additionally, these four systems must merge into one exchange system before merging with the commissary system. Congress must approve all merge actions. 

TRICARE Limits Some Prescription Refills During Pandemic

The Defense Health Agency and its TRICARE pharmacy benefits manager, Express Scripts, are limiting prescriptions for several medications used by hospitals to treat patients with the novel coronavirus.

Pentagon officials said last week they have limited prescriptions containing albuterol and levalbuterol, also known by the brand names ProAir, Proventil, Ventolin and Xopenex, to one inhaler every 30 days to prevent shortages of these medications, which also are used to help COVID-19 patients breathe.

6 May 1941: Just eight months after a prototype for a new single-engine fighter was ordered by the U.S. Army Air Corps, test pilot Lowery Lawson Brabham took off from the Republic Aviation Corporation factory airfield at Farmingdale, New York and flew the prototype XP-47B Thunderbolt, serial number 40-3051, to Mitchel Field, New York. When he arrived, he exclaimed, “I think we’ve hit the jackpot!”

Two Nominated for Top National Guard Bureau Posts

The National Guard is expected to welcome three new leaders to the top positions of the National Guard later this year after President Trump nominated officers to serve as NGB chief and the director of the Air National Guard.

Lt. Gen. Daniel R. Hokanson, the current director of the Army National Guard, was nominated Monday to serve as the Guard’s next top officer.

If confirmed by the Senate, Hokanson would be promoted to four-star general and take a seat on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He would replace Air Force Gen. Joseph L. Lengyel, who has served as the 28th chief of the National Guard Bureau since August 2016.
