This photograph shows Brian Koga and Leighton Sui at the 2005 Christmas tree trimming event at the State Headquarters. At this annual event, the full-time employees of the Headquarters decorate the Christmas tree with ornaments they bring to the ceremony. A small luncheon usually follows the tree trimming.
In recent years, luncheon musical entertainment by some very talented staff members have added to the festivities.
Brian served as the adjutant general’s clerk and driver for many years. His service began with Maj Gen Alexis Lum and continued into Maj Gen Robert Lee’s tenure. Brian passed in 2014.
Leighton retired from the Hawaii Army National Guard as a Command Sergeant Major. He went on to serve as the protocol officer for Governor Lingle for several years. He later moved to become the protocol officer at U.S. Army Western Command (WESTCOM).
A new leader has been named for the Indiana National Guard, a month after his predecessor resigned under pressure following claims that he retaliated against a staffer for reporting his alleged affair with a subordinate.
Governor Eric Holcomb‘s office announced Tuesday that Colonel R. Dale Lyles will become Indiana’s adjutant general and promoted to brigadier general effective October 1. Lyles is a 32-year military veteran who most recently has been deputy chief of staff for operations at the National Guard Bureau in Washington.
Webmaster Comment: This announcement comes in the same week that the Air Force relieved another squadron commander because of “a loss of confidence in his leadership abilities.” In the last two years, the military services have removed senior officers, many commanders, and several senior enlisted leaders. Several flag officers were removed and forced to retire.
Overbearing leadership, sexual misconduct, and other questionable behavior have never been acceptable in the military. Apparently complaints are now fully investigated and in many cases validated, and appropriate actions taken.

The 199th Fighter Squadron flew Phantoms from 1976 through 1987. This undated photograph show a Hawaii Air National Guard F-4C Phantom with a dark paint configuration. For a short period, Phantoms featured the 199th Fighter Squadron and 154th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron patches near the vari-ramp intake.
These aircraft had the full Hawaiian tail flash designed by Col Kurt Johnson. The tail flash design began when the squadron flew F-102 Delta Daggers in the 1960s.

Choosing a financial advisor has always been a confusing, high-stakes decision, and critics say a recent regulation designed to help consumers may actually have made it harder to know whom to trust.
On its face, the new measure, known as Regulation Best Interest, sounds promising. Adopted in June by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), it says that broker-dealers must act in the best interest of their customers when recommending investment moves, and that they must disclose any potential conflicts of interest. Brokers sell stocks, bonds and mutual funds, and before they were held to a lower, “suitability” standard, meaning they were required only to recommend investments that are “suitable” based on the client’s situation, goals and risk tolerance.

A short reminder that the RSVP suspense for the 2019 Hawaii National Guard Birthday Ball is September 30. For more information, go to the earlier Retiree News post on this year’s celebration.
Event Cancellation. The planned Hawaii National Guard reunion scheduled for Sunday, October 6 has been cancelled. The reunion event will be rescheduled, and Retiree News will provide details when they become available.

The Hawaii Air National Guard [HIANG] demonstrated the use of alternative energy to tow a KC-135 Stratotanker here July 18.
A U-30 Aircraft Tow Tractor retrofitted with hydrogen fuel cells was used to tow the 186,000 pound aircraft on the flightline of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and demonstrate the efficacy of the technology, showing one way the U.S. Air Force could incorporate the use of renewable energy in conducting operational missions while lessening its dependency on fossil fuels.
According to the Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies [HCATT], the event marked the first time hydrogen fuel cell technology had been used to tow a large USAF aircraft and was made possible through a collaborative effort of a consortium of public and private entities.
Congratulations in order: In this article, David Molinaro is identified as the project manager. However, Dave is now the Acting Director, Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies (HCATT). He takes over for Stanley Osserman, who retired on July 31

The Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs are gearing up for what will be the largest expansion of patrons to the military commissary system and exchanges in 65 years, making sure that shoppers will be able to get on base and find the shelves fully stocked.
Starting January 1, Purple Heart recipients, former prisoners of war and all service-connected disabled veterans, regardless of rating, as well as caregivers enrolled in the VA’s Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers program, will be able to shop at Defense Commissary Agency stores and military exchanges.

The Military Times has unveiled a new comprehensive job board that aims to connect veterans with thousands of job opportunities with employers seeking to hire people with military experience.
The new online job board offers employers from around the country an opportunity to target veterans and service members who are planning to return to the civilian job market.
Service members can create profiles, target a job search to specific locations and set up job alerts for new postings.
Veterans employment rates have remained strong in recent years, often falling below the national average.
The job board is the latest addition to the Military Times’ expanding support for veterans, which includes the Military Times Veterans Transition Survival Guide, annual ‘Best for Vets’ rankings for employers, and a news section that provides up-to-date information about education and transition issues.
Hawaii Air Guardsmen were among the first to respond to a crash at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada on September 16, 2011. Twenty five members of the Hawaii Air National Guard’s 154th Wing were displaying one of their C-17 Globemaster aircraft at the event when a WWII-era P-51 plane crashed into the audience, killing eleven people and injuring dozens of others.
The Guardsmen turned a food tent into a triage center, caring for all who needed attention and sending the more seriously injured to the area hospitals and treatment centers. Air Guardsmen from Nevada and Alaska also provided incident security.

The first two of an eventual 20 F-35 jets arrived Thursday at the Vermont Air National Guard base in South Burlington, the first Guard unit to receive the next-generation fighter.
Guard members and friends clapped as the planes flew over the airport for the first time Thursday afternoon, doing several flyovers after the three-hour flight from the factory in Fort Worth, Texas.
The delivery follows years of work and planning, as well as missions in the Guard’s previous aircraft, F-16s that flew continuously for weeks over New York after the Sept. 11 attacks and in combat tours in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East.
