HILO, Hawaii – Gerald Takase, Hawaii County Liquor Commission supervisor, received a Department of Defense Patriot Award June 1, in recognition of his continued support provided to his employee, TSgt Nestor Cacho, Hawaii Air National Guard.
Hawaii ESGR volunteer, Donna Shimizu presented the award.
Takase stated, “I was very honored to receive the award and thank Nestor for remembering me, even as a retired officer, the recognition is nice. Although, it (the award), should be for everyone in the office since they all shared in the sacrifice to pick up the slack in Nestor’s absence”.
“The surprise presentation was done with typical Big Island flair, filled with lots of food and beautiful maile lei to celebrate the occasion,” added Shimizu.

The Air Force’s fleet of F-22 Raptors needs to be reorganized or the service will incur unnecessary risks in future operations, according to a new report by the Government Accountability Office — the auditing and investigative arm of Congress.
The Air Force currently fields a small fleet of 186 F-22s, generally regarded as some of the best fighter aircraft in the world.
While the fleet is an integral part of the U.S. military’s ability to defeat high-end adversaries, the Air Force is facing challenges in providing mission-capable F-22s and the pilots necessary to fly them.

There’s no denying it. Left-handers are the odd ones out.
Sure, lefties make up about 10 percent of the population — but, frankly, it seems like society has forgotten about them. Just consider all of the right-handed gadgets, awkwardly designed desks, and cooking tools that fit comfortably only in your right hand.

A panel of House and Senate lawmakers on Monday reached a deal on a massive defense policy bill that includes a 2.6 percent pay raise for service members and an increase in troops, equipment and weapons for the Defense Department.
Senate and House Armed Services Committee staffers, who spoke with reporters on the condition of anonymity, said Monday that the National Defense Authorization Act, or H.R. 2810, will also address a series of other matters, including the next step in creating a space force and authorization for a military parade in November.
Federal and military retiree increases are determined later in the year.

Medicare provides health coverage for than 57 million people—it’s a godsend, but it can be a challenge to navigate.
Here’s some insider know-how that will help you put the Medicare pieces together.
The final version of the fiscal 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), released Monday night, no longer includes a plan that would have resulted in unfair fee increases for many retirees and their families enrolled in TRICARE.
This decision, made by leaders of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees, follows a campaign from the Military Officers Association of America and our thousands of our members to get the measure removed, which would have eliminated the grandfathering for beneficiaries enrolled in TRICARE prior to January 1, 2018 with the intent to establish a single co-payment structure for all beneficiaries.
Most military, veterans and retiree organization opposed these TRICARE increase

If you’re one of the 73.5 million Americans who have unhealthy cholesterol levels, heart-healthy lifestyle changes are important ways to improve your cholesterol and prevent it from getting progressively worse. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fewer than half of people with high LDL cholesterol (the type of cholesterol that puts you at risk for heart disease) are getting treated, and not even one in three have their high cholesterol under control.
Ivan V. Pacold, MD, a cardiology professor at Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, says that lifestyle choices matter, and “even if these changes don’t show up directly in your cholesterol numbers, they can be lowering your risk for heart disease.” So if you haven’t made the change to a heart-healthy lifestyle, here are nine ways to get started.
