Eat the Right Fish for Heart Health

From the Everyday Health website

From snapper to sole, tilapia to tilefish, there’s a wide variety of fish to choose from at your grocer’s fish counter. The American Heart Association (AHA) says that eating at least two 3.5-ounce servings of fish per week, such as salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardines, and albacore tuna, can help beat heart disease and heart attack. But there’s a catch: Research shows that so-called “heart-healthy” fish like these may not be so healthy for you after all.

To make sure you’re buying the best kinds of fish for your health, get up to speed about methylmercury and PCBs.

Education center reflects on 50 years: Part One – ‘Before him, there was nothing’

From the I.G. Brown Training and Education Center website

Many HIANG members chose to attend the five-and-a-half-week course in-residence NCO Academy. For some it was a quicker way to meet the Professional Military Education (PME) requirement than the correspondence course.

This article mentions that the SMSgt Cornwal Matsusaka‘s design was selected for the TEC official emblem. “Matsu” was a member of the HIANG who served as a technician for many years; he retired as a chief master sergeant.

The I.G. Brown Training and Education Center (TEC) celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

In honor of a half-century of learning, this feature series highlights TEC, from its first classes in a World War II-era aircraft hangar to the present day.

What does it take to put an education center together? Part one looks back at 1968 to 1978.

The Real Relationship Between BMI and Heart Disease Risk

From the Everyday Health website

click on chart to enlarge

Some data suggest a puzzling concept: If you carry extra weight, you may be more likely to recover from illness than a normal-weight or underweight person, and therefore have a lower relative risk of early death. It’s called the obesity paradox, and it’s one of the arguments used when discussing the flaws of body mass index (BMI), which defines obesity and is tied to health risk.

While the debate over the theory and BMI rages on, a new analysis suggests that at least when it comes to preventing heart disease, having a healthy weight could be critical for maintaining a long, healthy life.

Namesakes: Travis AFB, California

Air Force Magazine’s back-page feature is Namesakes. Every month it profiles the person or people after whom an Air Force facility was named. This post is about Travis AFB.

Air Force Base is a United States Air Force air base under the operational control of the Air Mobility Command (AMC), located three miles (5 km) east of the central business district of Fairfield, in Solano County, California, United States.

Situated in the San Francisco Bay Area and known as the “Gateway to the Pacific”, Travis Air Force Base handles more cargo and passenger traffic through its airport than any other military air terminal in the United States. The base has a long and proud history of supporting humanitarian airlift operations at home and around the world. Today, Travis AFB includes approximately 7,260 active USAF military personnel, 4,250 Air Force Reserve personnel and 3,770 civilians.

Travis AFB has a major impact on the community as a number of military families and retirees have chosen to make Fairfield their permanent home. Travis AFB is the largest employer in the City and Solano County as well, and the massive Travis workforce has a local economic impact of more than $1 billion annually. The Base also contributes a large number of highly skilled people to the local labor pool.

The base’s host unit, the 60th Air Mobility Wing, is the largest wing in the Air Force’s Air Mobility Command, with a versatile fleet of 26 C-5 Galaxies, 27 KC-10 Extenders, and 13 C-17 Globemaster III aircraft.

In addition, the base’s former Strategic Air Command Alert Facility is now a U.S. Navy complex that typically supports 2 transient Navy E-6B Mercury TACAMO aircraft assigned to Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron THREE (VQ-3) Detachment and normally home-based at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma.

New DOD Task Force Eyed for Merging Exchange Services, DECA

From the Military.com website

The three military exchange services and the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) would be merged into a single resale enterprise under a proposal backed by John H. Gibson II, the Defense Department’s new chief management officer, who has been tasked to make DoD business operations more efficient.

Gibson and a team tasked with reviewing military community services — base stores, recreation services, family support services and base schools — have drafted a memorandum, apparently for signature by Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick M. Shanahan, that would order extensive streamlining.
