Cancer can, and sometimes does, strike twice. It famously happened to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the Supreme Court, who was successfully treated for colon cancer in 1999 and then for pancreatic cancer in 2011. If not for the regular checkups she underwent after colon cancer, it is quite likely that her pancreatic cancer, which is rarely found early, would not have been detected while still curable.

In Hawaii, what high school you graduated from is often among the questions asked when you first meet someone. Public versus private, old versus new, town versus county, island versus island – some high school rivalries continue well into graduates’ old age.
The Images of Old Hawaii website periodically publishes articles about various high schools around the state. We will post links about these Hawaii high schools on their website periodically.
Waialua High and Intermediate is recognized nationally as one of 11-medal-winning schools from Hawaiʻi (recognized by US News, for performing well on state exit exams, based on students’ mastery of college-level material – all 11-schools received Bronze medals.)
Hawaii National Guard graduates include: Gloria Agron, David Franks – can you name others?

A recent study by researchers at Northwestern University highlighting a notable link between brain health and positive relationships.
For nine years, these experts have been examining “SuperAgers” — men and women over age 80 whose memories are as good — or better — than people 20 to 30 years younger. Every couple of years, the group fills out surveys about their lives and gets a battery of neuropsychological tests, brain scans and a neurological examination, among other evaluations.

Older Americans are especially vulnerable to scams and identity theft, and Medicare is doing something about it. U.S. seniors will start receiving new identification cards next year as part of an effort to protect them from the rising risk of fraud.
But that is the only good news surrounding a sweeping federal initiative to bolster fraud defenses by reducing the widespread use of Social Security numbers as identifiers throughout the government.

Many of us have found ourselves asking the question, be it on ordinary days or in times of illness, “Why am I dizzy?”
While dizzy spells can be uncomfortable, it probably won’t surprise you to learn that occasional dizziness is very common in adults. But you may not have suspected that vertigo — a related but more serious condition that makes you feel like the room is spinning as you stand still — is also common, affecting nearly 40 percent of people over age 40 at least once in their lifetime, according to the University of California San Francisco Medical Center.

For years, experts have urged Americans to keep their blood cholesterol levels healthy in order to minimize the risk of heart disease and stroke. For many people, that means getting a basic blood test for high cholesterol, also called a lipid panel.
But there’s more you can do to find the underlying cause of high cholesterol.
