shaved-iceFrom the Ozy Magazine website

I had just gotten a massive fish-filled poké bowl from Makai Sushi inside a local supermarket in Poipu, on the Hawaiian island Kauai. I thought my day couldn’t get any better, even by Hawaiian standards. But then I saw the shave ice stand. My mouth started watering. The roadside signs advertising Technicolor shave ice had in fact taunted me for days. Was this the moment of reckoning?

Off Track: The best 10 things I ate in LA

From the Frolic Hawaii website – Melissa Chang’s latest food commentary – this time LA food.

Melissa ChangI can’t believe it’s been five years since the last time I visited Los Angeles! I was fortunate to be included on a recent trip to the Grammy Museum with Outrigger Resorts, who is a sponsor of Mele Mei — both of whom are my social media clients — to kick off the music celebration, unveil the We Are Friends tribute to 1970s Hawaiian music and send local boy Kalani Pe’a off to win his first Grammy.

Once the event was over, I extended my time so I could visit with my chef friend Jay Terauchi, and as usual, we must have eaten at several places each day.

5 Times an Annuity Makes Sense for Retirement

From the U.S. News & World Report website

annuitiesdetail

When it comes to investing for retirement, annuities tend to get a bad rap. Not only do some annuities come with high fees that are hard to justify, but they are notoriously difficult (or impossible) to liquidate when you need cash. Further, some annuities are so complex that even experienced investors can hardly understand them.

So, should you even bother with an annuity? Well, it depends. Not all annuities are created equal. It might be worth giving them a chance if your retirement goals fall under a specific set of criteria. For certain types of investors heading toward retirement, annuities might even be one of the best options available.

Here are some of the situations where annuities work best:

5 Things You Need to Know About the Obamacare Replacement

On Monday, congressional Republicans finally released their plan to remake the Affordable Care Act, colloquially known as Obamacare. Repealing and replacing the landmark legislation, which extended health coverage to more than 20 million Americans after it was signed into law by President Barack Obama seven years ago this month, has been a campaign promise of Republican candidates for years and helped catapult Donald Trump to the presidency in November. You can read the full text here, although I have no idea why you’d want to.

Obamacare has been a boon to veterans. As of 2014, there were some 1.2 millions vets in the U.S. who lacked health coverage, and only 8.9 million out of the country’s 22 million vets enrolled in VA health benefits. A 2016 Urban Institute report found that the uninsured rate for nonelderly veterans fell by a whopping 42% between 2013 and 2015 alone, declining from 11.9% to 8.5% to 6.8%, according to data from the National Health Interview Survey.

Here are five of the biggest Obamacare-repeal takeaways for vets:
