Each year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.” The day of romance we call Valentine’s Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia.

The “Governor” of Pu’unui and “Grandpa” to many. Clarence Pacarro, longtime resident of Pu’unui, colleague and coach to many, friend and advocate to all, and “Grandpa” to thousands, died Thursday at age 88.
Born to Julia and Frank Pacarro on October 13th in 1928 in Watertown on Oahu, he was the fourth of eight children in the Pacarro family. In his early years the family moved to Makawele, Kauai, then moved back to Honolulu, eventually settling in Pu’unui. In their youth, he and his brothers were known for their basketball team, winning several tournaments throughout the state. After graduating from Farrington High School, Pacarro began his career at the Dole Company where he met his wife Theodosia “Teddi” Pacarro. The two were married in 1950. He was employed by Dole until the mid-seventies, and served in the Army National Guard for ten years. Later, Pacarro joined Midas Hawaii as Sales Manager, where he was known for treating all customers like family, and as a result, earned numerous national sales awards. He also purchased, ran, and ultimately sold the Waialae Laundromat.
Pacarro was a generous man who led by example, worked hard, put family first, and never turned away someone in need. He was nicknamed “the governor” because without hesitation he converted friends into family, and with a fair and big heart, looked after many who were “hana’e-d” over the years.
His true passion was for the game of basketball. Pacarro was a legendary coach who touched the lives of thousands during his years coaching at Farrington, Mid-Pacific Institute, and Punahou School. Through basketball he would teach character and sportsmanship; his motto was “Always be humble, don’t grumble, just smile.” An advocate of so many young athletes, in his later years he was fondly known as “Grandpa” by his players, both on and off the court. Pacarro passed away peacefully at The Villas at St. Francis with family by his side.
He is survived by his wife Theodosia Pacarro, his children Gary Pacarro, Charles Pacarro, Julie Stout, and Colin Pacarro, grandchildren Kahi Pacarro, Noel Pacarro Brown, Tony Pacarro, Bobby Pacarro, Juliann Pacarro, Kristin Pacarro, Brittany Pacarro, Andrew Pacarro, Alissa Pacarro, and his nine great grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held at Thurston Chapel at Punahou School on Saturday February 18th. Visitation will begin at 1:15pm with a service to follow at 2:30pm. Arrangements provided by: Ultimate Cremation Services LLC

The 154th Wing flew the F-15 Eagles from 1987 through 2010. Many of the 199th Fighter Squadron pilots crosstrained from the F-4C Phantoms the unit had flown from 1976. There were some very good pilots and the squadron validated it’s reputation as one of the best fighter units around.
This slide show of photographs featuring HIANG’s F-15s was posted in 2007. Enjoy!

Retiree Update – Charles Goo: Chuck served with the 297th Air Traffic Control Squadron at Kalaeloa. After his military and technician retirement, he relocated to Thailand many years ago. In a recent email exchange, Chuck mentioned he has not be back to Hawaii in seven years. Great catching up with Chuck.
Chuck shared this photograph with Steve Abear when he visited Thailand. Steve is another second generation Guardmember. His father, Felix, served with the 201st Combat Communications Group in the Logistics Branch. On the civilian side, he worked with the 15th Air Base Wing. Steve’s mother, Pat, worked at the Clothing Sales Store, when it was located on the corner of B Street and Hanger Avenue.
Figuring out how much you need to save for retirement is a moving target. Save too little, you run out of money in old age. Save too much, you end up with a fancy funeral and wealthy heirs.
BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, created a series of indexes to track how much it would cost for investors to generate income in retirement.
“If you don’t know the fair value today of your anticipated retirement needs, it’s kind of like buying a house and not knowing what the mortgage is,” said Chip Castille, BlackRock’s chief retirement strategist.
Years from now many Baby Boomers will need help with the daily stuff of life, like dressing, bathing, eating or remembering to take medication.
Regular health insurance, including Medicare, doesn’t pay for help with these “custodial care” tasks, except in limited circumstances. Long-term care insurance does.
Yet faced with the coverage costs, many long-term care insurance shoppers get sticker shock and give up.
For 2016, the IRS, the states and the tax industry joined together to enact new safeguards and take additional actions to combat tax-related identity theft. Many of these safeguards will be invisible to you, but invaluable to our fight against these criminal syndicates. If you prepare your own return with tax software, you will see new log-on standards. Some states also have taken additional steps. See your state revenue agency’s web site for additional details.
We also know identity theft is a frustrating process for victims. If you become a victim, we are committed to resolving your case as quickly as possible.

Potentially serious drug interactions are a daily threat to older people who take multiple medications and supplements, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
One drug can affect the effectiveness of other drugs and how your body uses them. For example, your kidney and liver may not work as well, which affects how drugs are broken down and leave your body, the FDA said.
“There is no question that physiology changes as we age. Many chronic medical conditions don’t even appear until our later years,” Dr. Sandra Kweder, an FDA medical officer, said in an agency news release. “It’s not that people are falling to pieces; some changes are just part of the normal aging process.”
The FDA says these safety tips will help prevent harmful drug interactions or side effects
