The F-16CM, piloted by Maj. Alex Turner, was returning to Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, after the graduation flyover — attended by President Barack Obama — when it crashed in a nearby field.

Arizona Air Guard base named after Goldwater

“He was a great advocate for air power in the Senate Arms Services Committee, who did great things that should energize all of us to affect change”

The Arizona Air National Guard renamed Phoenix Sky Harbor ANG Base on December 9, 2016. The base will now be known as Goldwater ANG Base in honor of the late Senator Barry M. Goldwater who died in 1998.

barry-goldwaterIn 1946, Goldwater was one of the original members of the state’s first Air Guard squadron, 197th Fighter Squadron at Luke Field. After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Goldwater returned to Arizona and became the first federally recognized National Guard pilot in the state.

The unit moved to the Sky Harbor base in 1952. The unit began their tanker mission in 1972. The 161st Air Refueling Wing currently flies KC-135R Stratotankers. The Wing has earned the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award five times – 1968, 1972, 1977, 2012, and 2016.

He dedicated 37 years of his life to military service in the Army, Air Force Reserves and Arizona Air National Guard; eventually retiring as a major general.

Goldwater was a five-term Republican United States Senator who suffered a landslide loss in the 1964 presidential election against Lyndon Johnson. In his later years, the conservative icon was a self-professed libertarian. He retired from the Senate in 1987 after 30 years service.

6 Key Facts Social Security Doesn’t Always Tell Retirees

social security 10Claiming Social Security is one of the most important financial decisions you’ll ever make. Many Americans prefer to turn to the Social Security Administration for help in figuring out when to take their Social Security benefits, and the SSA provides a lot of valuable information both on its website and through its personnel.

Yet a recent study from the General Accounting Office took a closer look at the way that the SSA interacts with people filing for Social Security benefits, and it found that in the process of handling in-person claims, the SSA’s claims specialists didn’t always provide all the key information that people need in order to make an informed choice. Below, we’ll look at six key aspects of Social Security for which you might not get the facts you need from SSA personnel.

The history of the National Guard began on December 13, 1636, when the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony ordered the organization of the Colony’s militia companies into three regiments: The North, South and East Regiments. The colonists had adopted the English militia system which obligated all males, between the ages of 16 and 60, to possess arms and participate in the defense of the community.

The early colonial militia drilled once a week and provided guard details each evening to sound the alarm in case of attack. The growing threat of the Pequot Indians to the Massachusetts Bay Colony required that the militia be in a high state of readiness.

The organization of the North, South and East Regiments increased the efficiency and responsiveness of the militia. Although the exact date is not known, the first muster of the East Regiment took place in Salem, Massachusetts. The National Guard continues its historic mission of providing units for the first-line defense of the nation.

The 101st Engineer Battalion, Massachusetts Army National Guard, continues the East Regiment’s proud heritage of 350 years of service.

Older Adults Are Still Skipping Vaccinations

shinglesLouise Abate first noticed an itchy tingle near her hairline. The pain started a day or two later as a blistering rash swept down from her scalp onto her forehead. “My eye was so swollen I couldn’t open it,” she said.

Shingles. Ms. Abate, 76, a retired casino supervisor in Rio Rancho, N.M., had had the disease twice before, in her 60s, but the episode three years ago hit particularly hard.

Long after the rash healed, which took about three weeks, she suffered the complication called postherpetic neuralgia — lingering nerve pain that can last for months or even, as in her case, years. “I get up every day, and it’s there,” she said. “I go to sleep, and it’s there.”
