Please note that here in Hawai‘i, we need to stock water and supplies for at least 7-10 days. Most government websites recommend 3 days, and that is a reasonable supply if you live on the continental United States. Hawai‘i is dependent on container ships that take 7 days to get to Hawai‘i from Oakland or Los Angeles.
December 7, 2016 marks 75 years since America was launched into World War II with the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor is an opportunity to honor the sacrifice and dedication of our “Greatest Generation” both civilian and military, the endured incredible sacrifices on December 7, 1941, the “date which will live in infamy.” It would thrust America into World War II, changing Hawaii and America forever and continues to define their place in the world.
The events of that date triggered our resolve as a nation, our can-do attitude and resourcefulness and an unmatched commitment to the defense of freedom.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Social Security Administration (SSA) launched a new Health IT initiative that enables VA to share medical records electronically with social security disability processors. This secure process will save time and money resulting in better service for Veterans and dependents who apply for social security disability benefits.
The SSA requests nearly 15 million medical records from health care organizations yearly to make medical decisions on about three million disability claims.
For decades, SSA obtained medical records through a manual process. This new national initiative puts in place an automated process to obtain Veterans’ medical records entirely electronically.

It all started when Barbara Funamura went to Kauai Veteran’s Cemetery on a Veterans Day to put flowers, and saw that some of the graves did not have any flowers. On Memorial Day the graves were crowded with flowers but not so on Veterans Day.
When she became president of the Kauai United Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association over twenty years ago, she made the placing of flowers on every grave a major project for the United BWA.
Since 1938, Veterans Day has been recognized as a National Holiday to honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. On October 8, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower designated November 11, the day which marked Armistice Day and the end of World War I, as Veterans Day. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) acknowledges Veterans Day as “A celebration to honor America’s Veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.”
Veterans Day should not to be confused with Memorial Day

Republican Donald Trump won the presidency on Tuesday, cinching 279 electoral votes to Hillary Clinton’s 228.
Throughout the campaign, Trump has said the US military is in “bad shape,” and has called on Congress to repeal the Budget Control Act and submit a new budget that would “rebuild our depleted military.” What that means for the Air Force is not entirely clear, however.
According to Trump’s campaign website, he wants to “provide the US Air Force with the 1,200 fighter aircraft they need.” However, USAF currently has 2,034 Total Force fighter/attack aircraft, including 1,312 in the Active Duty alone.
For the other services, Trump wants to increase the Army’s Active Duty end strength to 540,000, rebuild the US naval fleet to 350 ships, and grow the Marine Corps to 36 battalions. He has said he will call on the Defense Secretary and members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to work with other federal agencies to conduct a “comprehensive review” of US “cyber vulnerabilities,” so they can then “provide recommendations on enhancing US Cyber Command, with a focus on both offense and defense” against state and non-state actors, according to his website.
Trump’s foreign policy agenda will be a significant departure from the outgoing Obama Administration. He has repeatedly questioned the United States’ ability to continue providing the lion’s share of defense funding to the NATO Alliance, saying in the final presidential debate that the US can no longer afford to defend countries such as “Japan, Germany, [and] South Korea,” without some type of reimbursement. He has called for an “end of the current strategy of nation-building and regime change.”
And, when asked if he would use a nuclear weapon in the Middle East or Europe, he said, “I would never take any of my cards off the table.”
On ISIS, Trump said he will continue to “pursue aggressive joint and coalition military operations to crush and destroy” the terrorist organization, by cutting off its funding, expanding intelligence sharing, and using cyber warfare “to disrupt and disable their propaganda and recruiting,” according to his website.
Trump also has said he will bring back waterboarding, “and a hell of a lot worse.”
Your heart is the hardest working muscle in your body, beating around 70 times per minute, 100,000 times per day, and about 2.5 billion times in the average lifetime. Like any muscle, if you stress your heart and force it to work even harder than normal, your heart can become damaged.
Some of the ways people stress the heart may seem obvious — carrying too much belly fat or getting too aggressive with extreme exercise. Others, like sitting for hours, drinking too much alcohol, or not getting enough sleep, might easily be overlooked.
Once you become aware of how you stress your heart, and how to prevent doing so, you’ll have taken a big step toward reducing the chance of atrial fibrillation, heart attack, stroke, or heart failure.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) created Extreme Weather Information Sheets to cover coastal regions of states and the two US territories that are particularly at risk from tropical storms and hurricanes. These information sheets are “one-stop” ready references containing phone numbers and Web site information residents can use during potentially life-threatening weather emergencies.
