Want to protect your privacy online? Leave your phone outside your bedroom

Cyber crime 01Christopher Soghoian of the ACLU talks privacy, security and why you should put a sticker on your webcam right now, in conversation with investigative journalist Will Porter.

As the principal technologist at the American Civil Liberties Union, Christopher Soghoian (TED talk: How to avoid surveillance … with the phone in your pocket) spends much of his time thinking about privacy and surveillance and how individuals can protect themselves from spying. Recently, he recorded a Facebook Live conversation with his fellow TED Fellow, Will Potter (TED Talk: The secret US prisons you’ve never heard of before), a reporter and author who specializes in covering dissident politics and culture and whose first question to Christopher was: If I don’t have anything to hide, why should I be concerned about privacy or security, anyway? With that, they were off.

8 Nutrients You May Be Lacking

Fighting back feelings of fatigue, irritability, or depression?

Before you diagnose yourself with a chronic condition, take a look at your diet. Sometimes, common medical symptoms can signal a nutritional deficiency.

In the United States, 1 in 10 people have at least one nutritional deficiency, says Christine Pfeiffer, PhD, a research chemist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Center for Environmental Health. That figure, based on nutrition indicators in blood and urine tests, comes from the CDC’s latest nutrition report, published in 2012.

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR)

ESGREmployer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program, was established in 1972.  ESGR would promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military commitment.

ESGR is supported by a network of more than 4,500 volunteers in 54 committees located across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam-CNMI (Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands), Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Volunteers, hailing from small business and industry, government, education, and prior military service bring a vast wealth of experience to assist in serving employers, Service members, and their families.

Together with Headquarters ESGR staff and a small cadre of support staff for each State Committee, volunteers work to promote and enhance employer support for military service in the Guard and Reserve.

ESGR has served our country for more than 40 years, fostering a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. These citizen warriors could not defend and protect us at home and abroad without the continued promise of meaningful civilian employment for themselves and their families.

ESGR has continued to adapt to meet the needs of Reserve Component members, their families, and America’s employers by joining forces with a network of other national, state, and local government and professional trade organizations. Together, We All Serve!

How to Cope with 3 Common Retirement Emergencies

Most people pay for retirement using a combination of their Social Security income and withdrawals from personal savings. Retirees learn to live on this typically modest fixed income. But a significant home repair or large health care cost can disrupt your spending plan, perhaps even causing you to deplete your savings too quickly.

“The reasons for having an emergency reserve in retirement are really not much different than having one as a key component of anyone’s financial plan, except there is more on the line,” says Todd Smith, a certified financial planner and CEO of Level 5 Financial in Colorado Springs, Colorado. “No longer having a paycheck creates more risk.”

5 Things to Know When Buying an Annuity

annuitiesOne of the unnerving aspects of retiring is no longer having income from a job and needing to live on investments and Social Security.

With fewer companies offering pensions, one option for guaranteed income is an annuity. These products can be good for retirees who want some reassurance for monthly income, but financial advisors say investors need to know what they’re buying.

Falls a Growing and Deadly Threat for Older Americans

Falls are the leading cause of injury and death among older people in the United States, and this health threat is likely to grow since 10,000 Americans now reach age 65 every day, a new federal report shows.

Every second of every day, an older American falls. As falls increase, so do health care costs. In the report, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged doctors to help prevent falls among this high-risk group.

As you approach 70, tips like these can help trim your RMDs

If you are a member in good standing of the middle class, if not wealthier, and are in relatively good health, there are many blessings about retirement.

You have a lot more free time to pursue hobbies and other pursuits, and paying for them is not a problem. You usually have relationships with grandchildren to foster and savor. If you have managed your retirement finances well, you have more freedom to spend on non-necessities because Medicare is inexpensive, your home is likely paid in full, and you have already put aside the necessary savings for retirement.

Unfortunately, one downside does emerge once you turn 70½ — the required payment of ordinary income taxes annually on a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from IRAs, 401(k)s and other tax-deferred retirement vehicles. These are not inexpensive. Required distributions from your IRA are 3.65% in your first year and rise each year thereafter. At age 75, the required distribution is 4.37%; at age 80 it is 5.35%.
