Hawaii Air Guard and active-duty members are back from the fight

From today’s Star-Advertiser

The Hawaii Air National Guard’s F-22 Raptors made history on a just-concluded deployment to the Middle East in the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The 199th Fighter Squadron dropped bombs on enemy forces for the first time in the Hawaii Air Guard’s 70-year history, said Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Chuck Anthony. It was also the first operational deployment of the stealth fighters from Hawaii.

Pentagon Proposes First Changes to UCMJ in 30 Years

pentagonThe Pentagon has proposed significant changes to how troops are tried and sentenced, two years after a comprehensive review of the military justice system was ordered by then-Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel in the wake of persistent sexual assault controversies.

The changes to the Uniform Code of Military Justice are the first proposed by the Pentagon in 30 years, after years of Congress mandating change, and would also make the system more transparent to public view.

Hawaii Raptors Return from Deployment

Taken from today’s Department of Defense press release

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii – More than 200 members of the Hawaii Air National Guard (HIANG) and the active duty Air Force returned with their F-22 Raptors to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam following a six-month-long deployment to the Central Command Area of Responsibility (CENTCOM AOR).   The F-22 fighter aircraft and most of the Airmen departed from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in late September 2015.  The Airmen and F-22 aircraft returned home in several groups over the past several days.

The Hawaiian Raptors are flown by pilots from the HIANG’s 199th Fighter Squadron and the active duty’s 19th Fighter Squadron.  Maintenance and support personnel are from the HIANG’s 154th Wing and the active duty’s 15th Wing.  This was the first operational deployment for the Hawaiian Raptors.   While in the CENTCOM AOR the F-22 Raptors successfully struck a number of high-value ISIS (also known as Daesh or ISIL) targets.  The Hawaiian Raptors were an integral part of Operation Inherent Resolve–an 18-nation air coalition that is driving Daesh back considerably in Iraq and Syria.  Daesh has lost more than 40% of the populated areas it once controlled in northern Iraq and recently retreated from several key populations centers in Syria.

“Our people performed extremely well and they did it with the Aloha spirit.  Maintenance did an outstanding job, and made all their taskings.  We integrated well with the other coalition forces and conducted our operations flawlessly,” said one of the HIANG’s pilots.

Because of security considerations and host nation sensitivities, the HIANG will not release names of its personnel who deployed, and the country, or base where the Raptors operated.  The HIANG will also not release the number of F-22 fighters that deployed. The CENTCOM AOR  encompasses the area of Southwest Asia and most of the Middle East.

In 2010, the 199th Fighter Squadron converted to the F-22 from the F-15 Eagle and began flying the Raptors in partnership with the 19th Fighter Squadron.

All of the HIANG Airmen who deployed are part of the 154th Wing, the largest Air National Guard wing in the nation. The Hawaii Air National Guard is comprised of nearly 2,500 Airmen whose federal mission is to be trained and available for active duty operational missions.

Your computer is spying on you and you don’t even know it.

webcam Spying

At an old job in New York, one OZY editor and all her female colleagues covered their laptop cameras with yellow Post-its. Each had had one too many creepy experiences with an overly friendly IT guy. Call them paranoid, but maybe they were just prepared. In one study, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley found:

Less than %5 of people knew when their computer is recording them

Rebecca Portnoff, the lead researcher, happened across some Web forums that discussed things like webcam hijacking. “Obviously creeped out,” she wanted to figure out a defense for the public. She and the other researchers had 98 people sit at a computer and perform two tasks — one computer-based, the other paper-based. During the session,

The Best Ways to Lose Weight After 50

hamburgers

Nearly every day, a news report focuses on the rising rates of obesity in the U.S., which is currently at more than one-third of the population, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Carrying excess weight not only makes it difficult to zip up your pants, but it also is associated with many serious health risks, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers, the CDC says.

Worse yet, adults age 40 to 59 comprise nearly 40 percent of this statistic and adults 60 and over make up another 35 percent. Several factors make this so, says Dr. Brian Quebbemann, a bariatric surgeon and founder of the N.E.W. Program in Newport Beach, Calif.

USAF Officer Nominations Go to Senate

NGB ShieldPresident Obama has nominated Lt. Gen. Joseph Lengyel to serve as the next chief of the National Guard Bureau. If confirmed by the Senate, Lengyel, who currently serves as the National Guard Bureau vice chief, would pin on a fourth star and replace Army Gen. Frank Grass, who became chief in September 2012. Carter said Lengyel “has demonstrated strong and steady leadership” over the course of his more than three decades in the Air Force, according to an April 5 statement.

Maj. Gen. Maryanne Miller was nominated for a third star and for assignment as Chief of the Air Force Reserve and commander of Air Force Reserve Command. If confirmed, Miller, who has served as deputy to the Reserve chief since October 2013, would replace Lt. Gen. JJ Jackson.

AFG-071030-003Maj. Gen. Leon Rice, who currently serves as the adjutant general of the Massachusetts National Guard, also was nominated for a third star and assignment as director of the Air National Guard. If confirmed, Rice would replace Maj. Gen. Brian Neal, who has served as acting director since Lt. Gen. Stanley Clarke retired in December.

The 9 Keys to a Happy Retirement

retirement and happinessIt turns out that happiness and retirement do go together.

Well, based on the research and books I’ve read and interviews I’ve done since becoming editor of the Money & Security and Work & Purpose channels at Next Avenue in 2011, they can go together if you play your cards right.

And it’s not just about having saved enough money or having a great pension, though both of those help. I’ve come to the conclusion that there are nine keys to a happy retirement, one of them pertaining specifically to couples. I’ll lay them out shortly and suggest a few books that can help you retire happy.

Of course, the definition of retirement isn’t what it was even 10 years ago. For many people, retirement in 2016 is not about quitting your full-time job full-stop at 65 and then living a life of leisure.

New Airfare Rule Could Lead to Costly Mistake

airplane genericNEW YORK (AP) — The three largest U.S. airlines have changed the way they price multi-city trips, forcing those who book such itineraries to pay hundreds of extra dollars in airfare.

Most fliers buy simple roundtrip tickets and won’t be affected. But travelers visiting several cities on one trip, especially those flying for business, are seeing airfares six or seven times the normal price. Many might not know of the new policy or that there is a way to avoid the higher fares.

The Origins of Army Day

US Army old

Army Day should not be confused the Army’s Birthday, which is celebrated on June 14. The origins of Army Day can be traced back to a little-known Defense Test Day, which was observed only twice: once in 1924 and once in 1925. Congress then disallowed any further observances of this day. In response, the Military Order of the World War under Colonel Thatcher Luquer established Army Day. Army Day was first celebrated on May 1, 1928. That date was chosen in hopes of dampening Communists’ celebration of Workers’ Day, which also occurs on May 1. But, starting in 1929, Army Day was changed to April 6, the anniversary date of the United States’ entry into World War I.
