Obama to Veto Defense Bill

WASHINGTON — The White House says President Barack Obama will veto a sweeping $612 billion defense policy bill, citing objections over how the measure is funded.

Obama will veto the bill Thursday afternoon in the Oval Office.

Obama also disapproves of provisions in the bill that would complicate his pledge to close the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

It’s the first time Obama has rejected the measure. Presidents have signed the bipartisan bill into law annually for more than 50 years.

The move will force Congress to revise the bill or try to settle a larger budget dispute that led Obama to veto it.

The bill would increase defense spending by adding $38 billion to a separate war-fighting account. The White House says that’s a “funding gimmick.”

Check Six: Club Jetty

During the 1960s and the early 1970s, the then 154th Fighter Group deployed to Barking Sands on Kauai for summer camp. Most of the flying was during daylight hours with the 199th Fighter Squadron flying F-102A Delta Daggers.

Off duty activities included fishing off the restricted runway beach (fishing where no one else can fish), games of chance, and just relaxing. Others traveled to Lihue for dinner, followed by a drink (or more) at Club Jetty in Nāwiliwili. Evenings usually ended with a stop at Hamura Saimin.

Then there was the time a few stopped by the old Kauai Surf (after a few drinks at Club Jetty) and “borrowed” one of the tiki.  But that’s a story for another post.

In a post on his Images of Old Hawaii website, Peter Young provides some background and memories of Club Jetty.

Don’t fall for this chip credit card scam

imagesThe credit card industry is undergoing a massive change as it switches to chip-based cards, and scammers are taking advantage.

Banks have been sending out new credit and debit cards that have an embedded microchip to meet an October 1 liability change deadline. But not everyone has received a new card yet: A September survey showed almost 60% of card users haven’t received a chip-enabled card.

The uneven distribution of new cards is leaving a window open for scams.

No Cost of Living Adjustment for 2016

The 2016 cost of living adjustment (COLA) for federal benefits will be zero for 2016. This is because the index used to determine  military retirement, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) disability payments, and social security shows that there has been on inflation since last September. The dramatic decrease in the cost of gasoline has cancelled out all the other price increases, leaving a net negative Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).  This is the third time of no increase since increases were made automatic in 1975.   Federal payments are received by about 80 million US residents each year, including retired and disabled workers and their families, disabled veterans, and federal retirees.

The short version of what I’ve just said: no increase in military retirement, VA disability, or social security in 2016.

Guard and Reserve Need More Days To Train

The Army National Guard and Army Reserve need more than 39 days of training a year in order to truly be an operational force, the commanding general of First Army said Tuesday.

“The term ‘operational reserve’ is tossed around quite a bit, and I’m not sure we understand what that means,” said Lt. Gen. Michael Tucker in an interview with Army Times. “I firmly believe that if we’re going to maintain the reserve component as an operational reserve, we’re going to have to give them more days to train.”
