Many Hawai‘i National Guard retirees still refer to the Guard headquarters on Diamond Head Road as Fort Ruger. Many of the young Guard members do not know the history about the Fort Ruger area and its part in Hawaiian history.
Two of the Fort Ruger gateposts still remain and define some the Fort Ruger area. Two rock wall gateposts remain where Monsarrat Avenue transitions into Diamond Head Road. The guard post often has graffiti in spite of community clean up efforts. The other gatepost is at the entrance to the Hawai‘i National Guard headquarters

Come January, some military retirees are sure to ask why they haven’t seen an annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in first-of-year paychecks.
About the same time, some active duty members will grumble that their annual pay raise has been capped again, this time at 1.3 percent, on the heels of record-low one percent pay hikes in both 2014 and 2015.
That’s also when some military folks might begin to wonder whose paydays have been pinched harder lately, service members or retirees?

24 October 1953: At Edwards Air Force Base, California, Convair’s Chief Test Pilot Richard Lowe Johnson took the first prototype YF-102 Delta Dagger, serial number 52-7994, for its first flight. Dick Johnson was a former U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel and a leading military test pilot.
The YF-102 was a delta-wing interceptor developed from the earlier experimental Convair XF-92 Dart. It was designed as an all-weather, missile-armed, Mach 2 fighter. The single-seat, single-engine fighter was powered by an interim Pratt and Whitney J57-P-11 afterburning turbojet engine, which was rated at 10,900 pounds of thrust, or 14,500 pounds with afterburner.
