The end of the Green Service Uniform: 1954-2015

The green service uniform has finally been laid to rest after 61 years of approved wear, the vast majority of that stretch as the service uniform that defined the Army.

As of October 1, the “Green Class As” are no longer permitted for wear.

From 1902 through World War II soldiers wore an olive and/or khaki/tan combination of some sort. But then the Army wanted a sharp, classic and dignified look to distinguish soldiers in a postwar era.

DIAMOND HEAD THEATRE PRESENTS SISTER ACT

Show runs September 25 — October 18, 2015

PLOT SYNOPSIS: SISTER ACT, based on the 1992 hit film, is a feel-good musical comedy that tells the hilarious story of wanna-be-diva, “Deloris Van Cartier,” (played by Alison Maldonado) whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime. The cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look—a convent which is run with an iron hand by the acerbic “Mother Superior,” played by Alison Aldcroft. Rounding out the convent residents–Jody Bill Bachler plays shy and soft-spoken nun, “Sister Mary Robert”; Lisa Konove is the choir mistress, “Sister Mary Lazarus,” and Emily Charleton plays perky “Sister Mary Patrick.”

With her king-size personality, Deloris breathes new life into the church, the choir and the community, but in doing so, blows her cover. Soon, the criminals are giving chase, only to find themselves up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood.

Directed by Andrew Sakaguchi with Musical Direction by Phil Hildago, Sister Act will be playing from September 25 until October 18, 2015. Gold Star Fathers

Gold Star MothersPresident Barack Obama’s signature is all that remains for fathers of fallen service members and those permanently disabled to receive preferential hiring status for jobs with the federal government. The Gold Star Fathers Act recently passed the House after clearing the Senate in May.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Oregon, and Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, would give fathers that same benefit that has been given to mothers of fallen and permanently disabled service members. They receive a 10-point hiring preference when applying for federal jobs.

“Families whose sons and daughters have been killed or disabled in combat have suffered grievously,” Wyden said in a statement following the House vote. “While no action can remove that grief, this bill provides long overdue recognition to these fathers whose sons and daughters have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”

Brown said, “By extending federal preference eligibility to fathers, we are righting a wrong that should have been corrected many years ago. This law will ensure that we honor the sacrifice of Gold Star fathers.”

Gold Star refers to the emblem traditionally displayed by families of fallen service members as a symbol of their loss.
