5 Health Benefits of Quitting Soda and Diet Soda

fizzy-drinks

We’ve gotten smarter about soda since the days when it was considered an acceptable wash-down after an economical meal at McDonalds, or a sensible diet lunch (supplemented with a smoke). Or have we?

Drinking soda is an easy habit to fall back into — it’s everywhere, and it’s easy to consider diet versions to be a relatively harmless vice. A sip for nostalgia’s sake or a quick caffeine hit can lead back to a three-a-day habit. So we had two diet experts tell us what happens to your body once you finally give up the colorful carbonated menace for good. In their view, soda isn’t just bad for you—it’s barely even liquid.

More on the OPM cyber breaches

It is important to realize how this affects Federal workers AND retirees.

“If an individual underwent a background investigation through OPM in 2000 or afterwards, it is highly likely that the individual is impacted by this cyber breach. If an individual underwent a background investigation prior to 2000, that individual still may be impacted, but it is less likely.”

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has announced the results of an interagency forensics investigation into the recent cyber incident involving Federal background investigation data and the steps it is taking to protect those impacted. As information had become available and verifiable, the agency updated Congress, the Inspector General, Federal employee representatives, and – most importantly – those that are affected. The announcement is the latest in a series of updates, and OPM will continue to provide additional information going forward, it says.

Manny CarlosRetiring soon is MAJ Manny Carlos.  He starts his terminal leave at the end of the month. There was a small retirement luncheon (at his request) at the Willows Restaurant last Friday. In attendance were his family, his co-workers and several others from outside agencies and commands. He received Meritorious Service Medal and several gifts. Then there was the story about the macadamia nut plantation Manny owns in the Philippines…

Manny served in the active Air Force before enlisting in the Hawai‘i Air National Guard. His commissioning soon followed. His first assignment was with the 292d Combat Communications Squadron on Maui before accepting a fulltime position with the then 169th Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron.

In 2009, he transferred to the Hawai‘i Army National Guard. He headed the State Partnership Program and worked closely with counterparts in many Asia Pacific nations.

Happy Trails to Manny!

Ronald HanGovernor David Y. Ige has extended Ronald Han as the Director of the Office of Veterans Affairs. His current tenure now extends until Governor Ige’s current term ends on December 2, 2018.

Governor Neil Abercrombie initially appointed Ron during the first year of his administration. Since then, Ron has done an exceptional job with the veterans and veterans’ programs.

Ron is working diligently on the committees for three major projects right now.  The first is the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. The second is the Gulf War Memorial. The last is the most complex and long term, the design and building of a veterans home on Oahu.  This home will be like the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo.

Ron will continue to serve Hawai‘i’s veterans.

84,000 Hack Victims Still Not Notified

OPM logoNearly 40 days after the Office of Personnel Management divulged that attackers copied millions of government employees’ personnel records, the agency says it has alerted 98 percent of affected employees. That, however, still leaves 84,000 individuals who have not been notified that their privacy has been compromised, according to OPM statistics.

The challenge of warning 4.2 million feds about the threat to their financial and personal security raises questions about the ability to inform more than 21 million victims of another related hack of OPM background investigation files.

my Social Security

SS logo

The Social Security Administration has “my Social Security” online services. If you currently receive benefits, you now can get a benefit verification letter; change your address and phone number; and start or change your direct deposit. That’s in addition to accessing your earnings record and viewing benefit estimates if you do not currently receive benefits.

People age 18 and older who are not receiving benefits can sign up for a “my Social Security” account to get a personalized online Social Security Statement. The online Statement provides eligible workers with secure and convenient access to their Social Security earnings and benefit information, and estimates of future benefits they can use to plan for their retirement. In addition, the portal also includes links to information about other online services, such as applications for retirement, disability and Medicare.
