Hackers remotely kill a Jeep on the highway

Thanks to several Retiree News readers who emailed this article for posting.  While this hacking deals with Jeeps, an earlier hacking last years dealt with General Motors automobiles.

Jeep CherokeeI was driving 70 mph on the edge of downtown St. Louis when the exploit began to take hold.

Though I hadn’t touched the dashboard, the vents in the Jeep Cherokee started blasting cold air at the maximum setting, chilling the sweat on my back through the in-seat climate control system. Next the radio switched to the local hip hop station and began blaring Skee-lo at full volume. I spun the control knob left and hit the power button, to no avail. Then the windshield wipers turned on, and wiper fluid blurred the glass.

Lockheed Martin to Buy Sikorsky

1280px-Lockheed_Martin.svg

Lockheed Martin announced Monday plans to acquire military and commercial helicopter maker Sikorsky Aircraft from United Technologies for $9 billion, a price that will “effectively” be reduced to $7.1 billion after tax benefits are taken in to account. “Sikorsky is a natural fit for Lockheed Martin and complements our broad portfolio of world-class aerospace and defense products and technologies,” said Marillyn Hewson, company chairman, president, and CEO. “I’m confident this acquisition will help us extend our core business into the growing areas of helicopter production and sustainment.” The acquisition would make Lockheed the largest maker of military helicopters in the world. Lockheed also announced plans to conduct a “strategic review of alternatives” for its government IT and technical services businesses, including a “portion of the Missiles and Fire Control business segment,” which includes a range of capabilities such as JASSM and the Sniper advanced targeting pod used on the F-15, F-16, F-18, B-1, B-52, and A-10. However, the company noted that programs “mostly focused on defense and intelligence customers” will not be included in the review, but “realigned into the corporation’s other four business segments.” Lockheed plans to align Sikorsky under its Mission Systems and Training business segment once the acquisition is complete “by late fourth quarter 2015 or early first quarter 2016,” states the release. “MST and Stratford, Conn.-based Sikorsky currently partner on a number of critical programs, including the VH-92 presidential helicopter, Combat Rescue Helicopter, and the Navy’s MH-60 helicopter,” states the release. Check Six: Barry Castellano

Castellano1 BarryFifteen years ago, Barry Castellano passed away on July 22, 2000. He was 44. He suffered a medical condition at his home in Whitmore Village, taken to Wahiawā Hospital, where he passed later that night.

At the time, Barry was the commander of the 293d Combat Communications Squadron (293 CBCS) at Hickam AFB. In civilian life, he was a senior network controller, working for Verizon.

Barry was a proud graduate of Wai‘anae High School, and was the first from his school to receive an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. After his graduation and commissioning, he served on active duty for several years with his last tour at Hickam AFB as a part of the Pacific Communications Division (PCD).

In his job, he interfaced frequently with the 201st Combat Communications Group (201 CCG). When he left active duty, Barry joined the Hawai‘i Air National Guard becoming a member of the 201 CCG.

At the 201 CCG, he worked in staff positions, and became the commander of the 298th Air Traffic Control Squadron on Kaua‘i. Barry returned to Honolulu to become the commander of the 293 CBCS at Hickam AFB.

He left the Hawai‘i Air National Guard to be as he said, “a fulltime father who was around for his children.” But he did promise to return when his children were older. At the time of his passing, he recently returned to the HIANG and started a second tour as the commander of the 293 CBCS.

Barry was the consummate officer and a truly outstanding individual.

Army Commission wants easier active-to-reserve transition

The congressionally mandated group tasked with examining the Army’s future force structure believes the service must improve the transition of soldiers back and forth between active duty and the Reserve and Guard.

Congress tasked the commission, led by retired Gen. Carter Ham, to examine the structure of the Army and recommend ways to make the best use out of limited resources and a shrinking end-strength.

U.S. military recruiting centers have been ordered to step up their security protocols after Thursday’s two-site rampage in Chattanooga, Tenn. that killed four Marines and a Navy petty officer.

Escalate security how, exactly? By “increase[ing] surveillance and tak[ing] basic steps such as closing blinds at the offices,” WSJ‘s Dion Nissenbaum reported.

My Back Pages: 1985 – 30 years ago, published last week was a photograph with then Lieutenant Gary Littlefield with two unidentified solders. Retiree News asked if anyone could identify the other two soldiers in the photograph.

Naomi Enriquez-Soraoka emailed from Colorado, saying.

“I believe that’s 1LT Karen Wall, Sacred Hearts 1980 grad. We were good friends when we were in high school Army JROTC & Rifle team.”

Naomi went on to say she served as a lieutenant in the 292nd Supply and Services Company from 1982-1984.

Mahalo to Naomi for her long distance sharing

Save the Date! Webmaster recently talked to Bruce Spear, retired commander of the Hiki Nō Battalion. The 487th Field Artillery, Hawai‘i Army National Guard, will celebrate the organization’s 50th anniversary later this year. The event will be at the COL Francis A. I. “Miki” Bowers Armory in Wahiawā.

Retiree News will post additional information as the event gets closer.

Off Track: Melissa Chang wrote a great article, Happy Birthday Rap Reiplinger, for Frolic Hawaii.

If you’re local, usually over 35 years old, you remember this funny guy with a funny name who hit the comedy scene in the 1970s. Rap Reiplinger made locals laugh both with the group Booga Booga (with Ed Ka’ahea and the late James Grant Benton) and on his own until his cocaine-related death in 1984.
