Some terms are old – since the early Air Force – and others are relatively new, but anyone who served in the Air Force will recognize most of these terms.
Not only will you likely pay more if you book a flight at the last minute, but purchasing tickets too early also can cost you.
Kate Horrell from the Paycheck Chronicles has received many questions about how to change an address on file with the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS). It is important that you keep your address up-to-date. It will make things a lot easier if you need to get a replacement document, or make any other changes to your account.
There are four ways to change your address: through the myPay system, through the Fast Forms program, via the regular mail, or by fax. For more details, read the Paycheck Chronicles article
Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawai‘i –The Hawai‘i Air National Guard (HIANG) will host its second large-scale “Sentry Aloha” fighter exercise in 2015, beginning this week. Area residents may see an increase in fighter aircraft activity as they take off and land at Honolulu International Airport. The exercise officially begins on Thursday, March 5, but residents may see additional aircraft arriving at Honolulu International Airport today.
For this exercise, F-15 Eagles from Oregon and Florida will be participating. The Arizona Air National Guard (ANG) will send F-16 Falcons, A-10 Warthogs, C-130 Hercules transports, and a KC-135 Stratotanker. ANG KC-135 refueling tankers will also be coming from Iowa and Maine. U.S. Naval aviators will be flying variants of the F/A-18 Hornet from California out of Kaneohe Marine Corps Base-Hawai‘i. There are a total of 45 aircraft and over 1000 servicemen from seven states participating.
“Sentry Aloha” exercises have been conducted by the HIANG several times per year, for decades. It has been growing in size and complexity following the HIANG’s conversion in 2010 to the F-22 Raptor, the U.S. Air Force’s premier fighter aircraft. “Sentry Aloha” is now the premier and primary training exercise to prepare multiple elements of the Air National Guard in the mission of our nation’s defense and augmentation of active duty forces should these ANG units be called upon for conflict or war.
Under the Total Force Integration construct, the 154th Wing, the largest ANG wing in the nation, operates the F-22, KC-135, and C-17 in conjunction with active duty units maintained under Pacific Air Forces’ 15th Wing. The Hawai‘i Air National Guard comprised of approximately 2,500 airmen whose federal mission is to be trained and available for active duty operational missions. It is also tasked with Hawai‘i’s air defense mission, protecting Hawai‘i’s airspace around-the-clock, 365 days a year. Its State mission is to be trained and available for domestic operations at home, including relief and recovery operations following a natural disaster.

Eighty men and women with expertise in national security have signed an open letter to House and Senate leaders to end the spending limits required by the Budget Control Act and adequately fund the military so it can address threats around the globe.
Former defense secretaries, retired generals, former senators and House members and other defense experts, including one governor, released their letter today. It is addressed to Representative John Boehner, R-Ohio, the House speaker, Senator Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, the Senate majority leader, Senator Harry Reid, D-Nevada, the Senate minority leader, and Representative Nancy Pelosi, D-California, the House minority leader.
The letter is signed by former Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, former Defense Secretary Melvin Laird, and others with backgrounds in defense. The letter is the product of the Foreign Policy Initiative, a nonprofit organization promoting U.S. engagement in the world.
The letter says, “The trillion dollars of defense spending cuts required by the Budget Control Act and sequestration present a grave and growing danger to our national security. Even as threats intensify across the globe, these cuts are undermining the readiness of our forces today and investment in the critical capabilities they will need tomorrow.”
It asks Congress to adopt a budget for fiscal 2016 that is “significantly greater” than what the president has requested. The signers of the letter support the recommendation of the National Defense Panel to repeal the Budget Control Act. The panel was created by Congress and warned last year of a “hollow force.”
The letter continues, “You have each expressed your opposition to the needless harm that the Budget Control Act and sequestration are inflicting on our Armed Forces. You now have an opportunity to end it.”
