F-15 Eagle Association

F-15

Retiree News received two emails concerning this F-15 Eagle Association. The association information is posted for Retiree News readers, many of who worked on or flew F-15 Eagles. No endorsement of the F-15 Eagle Association is given or implied by Retiree News.

The F-15 Eagle Association is dedicated to preserving more of the history of the F-15 through first-person accounts and photographs from those who were associated with this highly significant jet fighter. There is no cost to join. We are the home of the Eagle Drivers, WSO, Maintainers, interviews, letters, recons, survivors and snapshots e-newsletters.

We are an independent, all volunteer, non-profit organization. We are not affiliated with McDonnell Douglas or Boeing or any other aviation company. We are also not affiliated with any other F-15 related group. Our F-15 Eagle Association is intended to provide a valuable resource for F-15 related stories, interviews and pictures.

Rick Mitchell is the Association’s founder. He also created the F-84F and RF-84F Pilots Association that has over 170 members in five countries. In 1991, he created Sabre Jet Classics and was its editor for the first two years before giving that publication to the F-86 Sabre Pilots Association. He is a life member of the Sabre Pilots in return for creating their magazine. Rick is the son of a MDANG Group Commander. He is a published freelance writer for more than 31 years with three books of military aviation history and hundreds of magazine length articles.

The F-15 Eagle Association is focused on providing high quality electronic publications. Everything we send is through the internet and there are no paper mailings. Although we charge no dues to receive our e-newsletters, we do require all members to submit at least one F-15 related short story, pictures or other information about their flying, maintenance or other experiences at least once per year, or more often, if possible, in return to contribute toward the legacy of the F-15. The key to the long-term success of the F-15 Eagle Association will be member participation. Without that, there can be no Association.

Developing an Association like ours is another way to share experiences among interested members. Membership is open to anyone who flew, maintained, or contributed to the legacy of the F-15. When you join, tell us in a few sentences how you may be able to contribute your talents through the Association toward continuing the legacy of the F-15 Eagle.

For more information, email us at remitchell22@aol.com for assistance, or join us by completing the Contact second page of our website as listed below.

Report retiree death as soon as possible to DFAS

Defense Finance and Accounting Service officials advise reporting the death of a retiree as soon as possible by calling 800-321-1080, or completing a Notification of Death Fast Form on the DFAS website.

This will help avoid delay and possible financial hardship to surviving beneficiaries, family members or executors, who will be required to return any unearned military retirement payments.

Eligibility for military retired pay ends with the death of the retiree; therefore, if a retired pay payment was issued for the month in which the retiree died, the bank will be notified to return the payment upon notification of death. The beneficiary of the arrears of pay may be due a prorated amount for the month of death.

The caller reporting the death will need the retiree’s name, Social Security number and date of death.

New military retirement system might be popular, study says

A proposal that would transform the military retirement system by promising smaller monthly checks but also giving troops a lump sum “transition pay” immediately upon retirement could turn out to be very popular among most service members, according to a new study.

The study published Wednesday by the RAND Corp. think tank looked in detail for the first time at how today’s 1.4 million active-duty troops might respond to a sweeping overhaul of the traditional military retirement system.

China’s Clandestine Submarine Caves

Beneath the surface of the South China Sea off the tropical Chinese resort island of Hainan, an underwater tunnel guides submarines into a lair reminiscent of a James Bond spy movie.

From this pen the subs can venture in and out of the contested South China Sea hidden from the prying eyes of reconnaissance planes deployed by the U.S. Navy, which for the past half century has enjoyed almost unfettered access to the waters, say military watchers who cite satellite images of the area.

CSRS/FERS Annuity for Surviving Same-Sex Spouses

Sandy Hashimoto from the Human Resources Office asked Retiree News to post the following information.  She received this information from the Employee Benefits & Entitlements Branch at the National Guard Bureau.

As a result of the Supreme Court’s ruling, Surviving Same-Sex Spouses are now able to exercise their rights and interests as “widows” and widowers” under CSRS and FERS.

To ensure that surviving same-sex spouses are able to exercise their rights and interests as “widow” and “widowers” under CSRS and FERS, please give this information the widest dissemination possible.  OPM is encouraging all same-sex spouses of deceased annuitants who died prior to June 26, 2013 to apply for benefits even if the annuitants did not attempt to elect survivor annuity benefits for their spouses prior to death, and/or even if OPM has previously denied applications for benefits from surviving spouses as a result of DOMA.

The two attachments below are from the Federal Register for CSRS/FERS Annuity for Surviving Same Sex Spouses.
