What Is Heartburn?

heartburnAfter a decadent and delicious meal with all of your favorite ingredients — and dishes that are spicy, heavy, and with more grams of fat than you know are good for you — you may feel satisfied and happy. That is, until, the heartburn kicks in and sends you running to the medicine cabinet for your antacids, now groaning in discomfort.

Heartburn is a familiar feeling to many people. Heartburn symptoms include that uncomfortable burning sensation in the chest, which is often accompanied by a sour taste at the back of your mouth, creeping up from your throat. Heartburn symptoms can also include pain in the chest, though your heart itself is not part of the problem. Heartburn can also be a symptom of a medical condition, most commonly of gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD (acid reflux).
