Senior Leaders changes: The following is a short summary of Hawaii National Guard senior leader changes coming in the next few months.

Today, COL Mark Young will become the commander of the 298th Multi-Functional Training Unit.  He relieves COL Stuart Tomasa who will be assigned militarily as the Construction and Facilities Management Officer for the HIARNG.

Col Brian Buhler will leave his position as the Hawaii Guard’s Human Resources Officer to become the Vice Chief of the Joint Staff. The Vice Chief position is currently vacant.

Assuming the HRO position October 15 will be LTC Laura Soares. She currently serves as the Executive Officer, Hawaii Army National Guard.

On October 14, COL Neal Mitsuyoshi will become the commander of the 103rd Troop Command. He replaces COL Roger Pukahi, who will be assigned militarily as the State Army Aviation Officer.

Effective October 15, BG Kenneth Hara will become the Commander, Hawaii Army National Guard in M-Day status. The general will continue as the fulltime Deputy Adjutant General.

The current commander, BG Keith Tamashiro will continue as the Ground Component Commander. General Tamashiro is projected to retire on December 31, 2017.

On November 1, COL Moses Kaoiwi will become the Hawaii National Guard Director of the Joint Staff, transitioning his current position of Chief of the Joint Staff. The command will initiate paperwork to effect his promotion certificate to brigadier general.

Additionally, COL Roy Macaraeg will return from Washington, DC to take command of the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. He relieves COL Moses Kaoiwi effective November 1. The Change of Command ceremony is planned for November 5.

In November, SGM Elva Schaben will become the Command Sergeant Major of the Hawaii Army National Guard.  She will replace CSM Leonard H. Ventura who is retiring.
