When you think of ways to fight heart disease, adopting the so-called caveman diet might not immediately jump to mind as a tried-and-true option. But given that heart disease is the No. 1 killer in the United States — about 610,000 Americans die from it every year — the search for solutions to improve heart health and prevent future heart events is understandably a concern for many Americans.
Over the past few years, researchers have explored whether the paleo diet — a restrictive approach based on the eating habits of our hunter-gatherer ancestors and one favored by an estimated 1 percent of Americans — can benefit people’s heart health. (2) So far, it’s a mixed bag: Some findings are encouraging, while some members of the medical community remain skeptical.
