What to know about blood tests to diagnose a heart attack

Doctors can use various blood tests to determine whether a person has experienced a heart attack. If a doctor suspects a person has had a heart attack, they will typically take a blood sample and test for cardiac markers that may indicate a heart attack.

heart attack, or myocardial infarction (MI), happens when not enough oxygen-rich blood reaches the heart, decreasing its oxygen supply. This loss of blood supply occurs when one or more of the arteries supplying blood to the heart become blocked, often due to a clot, or when the demand for oxygen-rich blood exceeds the supply.
