7 June 1912: With Lieutenant Roy Carrington Kirtland flying a Wright Model B at College Park, Maryland, Captain Charles deForest Chandler was the first person to fire a machine gun mounted on an aircraft. The weapon was a prototype designed by Colonel Isaac N. Lewis.

Roy Carrington Kirtland (14 May 1874 – 2 May 1941) was a United States Army soldier, officer and aviator. Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico was named for him. He was among the first American military aviators and he recommended Henry “Hap” Arnold for aviation training. Read more

8 June 1966: During a publicity photo formation flight, a Lockheed F-104N Starfighter, N813NA, flown by NASA Chief Research Test Pilot Joseph A. Walker, was caught in the wingtip vortices of the North American Aviation XB-70A-2 Valkyrie, 62-0207, the second prototype Mach 3+ strategic bomber. The Starfighter rolled up and across the Valkyrie. The two airplanes collided, with the F-104 taking off the Valkyrie’s vertical fins, then exploding.

Military service members and civilian federal government employees would both receive a 2.7% pay raise under the proposed fiscal 2022 budget request released Friday.

In its first budget proposal, the Biden administration is asking for $715 billion in funding for the Defense Department in 2022, a 1.6% increase over the current year’s budget of $703.7 billion.

The proposed budget would also provide an average 3.1% increase in troops’ basic allowance for housing payments, and an average 2.3% increase in basic allowance for subsistence payments.

Cancer Vaccine Shows Early Promise Across Tumor Types

A personalized cancer vaccine proved possible to manufacture and was well tolerated in an early phase I clinical trial, researchers said.

The vaccine, known as PGV-001, was given to 13 patients with solid tumors or multiple myeloma who had a high risk of recurrence after surgery or stem cell transplant.

At last follow-up, four patients were still alive without evidence of disease and had not received subsequent therapy, four were alive and receiving therapy, three had died, and two could not be contacted for follow-up.
