Bear markets can be nightmarish for retirees. Unlike their younger counterparts, retirees don’t have years to recover their losses. If they are forced to sell beaten-down stocks and mutual funds to pay the bills, they could inflict permanent damage on their portfolios, increasing the risk that they will outlive their savings.
That’s what happened during the Great Recession. Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index lost more than half of its value during the bear market of October 2007 to March 2009, and IRAs and 401(k) plans lost about $2.4 trillion in value just during the final two quarters of 2008. Investors who rode out the downturn recouped their losses in the 11-year bull market, but seniors who took withdrawals before the stock market recovered were left with locked-in losses.

For many years, a F-86E Sabre static display greeted you as you entered the 154th Wing compound. The 199th Fighter Squadron flew Sabres from 1954-1958.
Many notiable fighter pilots began their flying careers during the Sabre era. Among these pilots were:
James Ashford, Jarret “Deke” Carr, George Duncan, Paul “Aimoku” Duvauchelle, Padraic “Paddy” Evans, Tai “Mynah” Hong, Kurt Johnson, Richie “Kuni” Kunichika, Marlin Little, David Lung, Robert Maguire, Harold Nagai, Edward Richardson, Melvin Souza, Melvin Yen
Most continued into the F-102 Delta Dagger era and provided leadership in the squadron, wing and higher.

Last fall, the Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association asked its 3,400 members, all current or former military pilots, to respond to a survey about whether they had been diagnosed with cancer. The response was “astonishing,” a leader of the group said.
A total of 894 association members, known as “River Rats,” responded to the seven-question survey which asked, “Have you ever been diagnosed with cancer?” The results of the survey were shared exclusively with McClatchy.
James L. Copelan, 75, of Mililani, Hawai‘i, died in Mililani on Sunday, May 3, 2020. He was born in Honolulu, HI. Private services held.
This obituary is probably for James L. Copelan, a retiree who served in the 154th Consolidated Maintenance Squadron for many years as a member of the command staff. In civilian life, James retired from the United States Postal Service after a long career.
Since 2016, the Honolulu Star Advertiser has chosen not to list more than basic information in their obituaries. Unless the family buys a “family placed obituary”, there is no information about survivors, where the individual worked or where services are scheduled. More information in an earlier Retiree News post.

Hawai‘i Air National Guard and 15th Wing Active Duty Airmen from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam performed 3 separate flyovers throughout all major metropolitan areas throughout the Hawaiian Islands on May 14, 2020. The flyovers went over most of Hawai‘i’s major hospitals in a salute to all of those on the frontlines in the fight against COVID-19, as well as those staying at home to “flatten the curve of transmission” of the virus.

Frolic writer Thomas Obungen posted the following article on the Frolic Hawaii website on March 12, 2020. It anticipated the opening of two food halls, three cocktail bars and more places in March. Of course, it was before the stay-at-home and social distancing restrictions that closed some eateries and limited others to takeout only.
We are posting this in anticipation of restrictions being eased in the coming days.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May, and it is the day Americans celebrate their military. In 2020, it falls on Saturday, May 16.
Unlike Veterans Day (previously observed as Armistice Day-the end of World War I), which honors those who wore the cloth of our nation at war, and unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who died wearing the cloth of our nation at war, Armed Forces Day is the proper day to honor all of the men and women currently serving as well as those who have served and sacrificed to defend our freedom.
