Retirement savers will be able to defer paying income tax on up to $6,000 in an individual retirement account in 2020. Workers with slightly higher incomes will also be eligible to save for retirement in traditional and Roth IRAs and qualify for the saver’s tax credit.

Many Americans believe they are likely to develop dementia — and they often turn to unproven ways to try to better their odds, a new study suggests.
In a survey, researchers found that almost half of Americans in their 50s and 60s believed they were at least “somewhat likely” to develop dementia. Yet few — 5% — said they had talked to their doctor about ways to lower their risk.

Retirees generally spend less money than people who are working. The average retired household has about 22% lower costs than the average working household and spends about $14,000 less per year, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Many people are able to live comfortably in retirement with a smaller income than they had while working.
Remember to prepare for these key areas of retirement spending:
The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (Hawaii-EMA) is currently recruiting volunteers to help us answer incoming phone calls and greet guests. Very light duties.
We’re looking at 15-20 hours a week. And yes, we’re very flexible with our hours. Our office hours are from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Our bunker is located inside Diamond Head Crater.
Volunteers need to complete a volunteer application and pass a background check prior to starting. Contact Arlina Agbayani, the Public Information Officer for more information at 733-4300 x529 or by email at arlina.a.agbayani@hawaii.gov
Additionally, there are several fulltime positions open at Hawaii EMA. Go to https://dod.hawaii.gov/hiema/employment/ to review the requirements.

Earlier this morning, the Retiree News website received its 1,000,000th view.
Since the website’s inception on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, we have strived to achieve our mission of “Sharing information with Hawaii National Guard retirees, members and friends.”
But the continuing success of this website could not happen without the several individuals who have been ongoing contributors since 2013. These individuals include:
Billy Chang, John “JC” Chun, Fred Hyun, Bob Inouye, Gordon Lau, Steve Lum, Aaron Pollick, Donna (Kim) Shimazu, Erik Wong, and the Hawaii Army National Guard staff who send information about upcoming events.
Special thanks to those who helped identify members in old photographs and sometimes providing the story behind photographs.
We appreciate the comments and feedback you provide, both complimentary and critical. We will continue to improve Retiree News as we move toward 2,000,000 views.
Thank you to everyone for being loyal followers of Retiree News.

Donna (Kim) Shimazu sent in this photograph she took to Retiree News. In the photograph (L-R) are Dennis Hara, Ken Hara, Wendell Hatami and Larry Hara.
According to Donna, Ken was in Hilo about four weeks ago and the Hara cousins got together for a small party. Donna is one of the Hara cousins.
Thanks to Donna for her continuing support of Retiree News.
Dennis, Wendell, and Larry are all smiling Hawaii Army National Guard retirees. The next party in Hilo to celebrate Ken’s appointment as the next Adjutant General should be a little larger.

To say that the keto diet has become one of the most popular diets of recent years is a complete understatement. Case in point: There are more than one million searches on Google every month for the keto diet. It’s unique because the fad diet has captured the interest of people who want to lose weight — and there’s no shortage of reported success stories to be found.
But researchers have taken a greater interest in it as a medical diet, too. In 2015, there were 159 studies listed in the database PubMed (which is run by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health). In 2018, that number doubled, with 322 published studies.

Behind the beach at Kualoa Beach Park and running into the Kualoa Ranch property was a temporary facility used for a World War II airfield. It was depicted as having a single 6,500′ (north-south) runway. No evidence suggests that Kualoa was ever paved. The entire runway was formed of pierced steel planking. The steel planking makes a strong case that the military had no plans to keep Kualoa open any longer than it was needed. The road to Ka‘a‘awa and farther up to the north shore crossed over Kualoa’s runway, so the cars would have to wait whenever an airplane took off.
