Off Track: 5 of Hawaii’s creepy urban legends and ghost stories

From the Hawaii Magazine website

Hawaii is full of haunted places. Sometimes it seems like you can’t make it to the next block, or street, or house without crossing some kind of hallowed ground—but you’d never know it. And everyone has their own stories of strange encounters with the supernatural that weave together Hawaiian mythology with imported legends and rituals from the many ethnic groups who’ve made Hawaii their home.

For example: I grew up in a constant state of readiness in the event that I crossed paths with night marchers: put your face down on the ground and don’t move. A more mundane example would be how I learned from my Chinese grandmother that whistling at night invited spirits, and slaps from her—the slaps were way more scary.

Here are five of Hawaii’s creepy urban legends, just in time for Halloween, but scary all year round.

5 Reasons You Should Eat Oatmeal Every Day

From the Everyday Health website

Have you ever had what I call a “Ratatouille moment?” You may have had one without realizing it, so let me explain what this is:

In the tender movie Ratatouille, a food critic sits down at a restaurant table and tastes a dish of ratatouille, a combination of eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, bell peppers, and a blend of seasonings and spices. As soon as his fork hits his lips, he’s immediately transposed to his childhood. He traveled back to sitting at his mother’s table, filling himself with this comforting dish laced with bursting flavors and, of course, love.

For me, oatmeal brings a Ratatouille moment. When I was a young child, my dad worked a very early shift. He used to wake me up in the wee hours of the morning and welcome me to the table with a steamy bowl of oatmeal. I never knew or cared about what time it was, I only knew that it was dark outside and that I was going to be surrounded by a dish of warmth. To this day, when I’m stressed or I’m just in the mood for a hug from my plate, I know I can count on the comfort of this guilt-free food that somehow feels indulgent.

Crohn’s Guide to Navigating Bathrooms Around the World

From the Everyday Health website

If you’re living with Crohn’s disease, you’ve probably taken note of — or even memorized — every bathroom in every location you’ve ever visited. It is, after all, essential information in case of an emergency.

But that all changes as soon as you decide to travel, especially if you’re going to a foreign country where you may not even know the word for “bathroom” or how to use the toilet.

In general, you can usually count on places like transportation hubs, historical sites, hotel lobbies, museums and galleries, and department stores to have public restrooms.

Aside from obvious latrine locations, here are some tips for how to find and properly use toilets around the world.

Off Track: 19 things people commonly get wrong about Hawaii

From the Insider website

We have come away from the older beliefs like everyone in Hawaii lived in grass shacks and such, but other beliefs continue. You probably ran across a tourist here that asked about one of the beliefs mentioned in this post.

For a person who has never been there, Hawaii can seem like an untouchable paradise where everyone lives on the beach and knows how to surf. But that’s not actually the case.

I’ve been fortunate to experience the Hawaiian islands firsthand multiple times throughout my life. Both my parents were born and raised on O’ahu, which means I frequently visited Hawaii it while growing up.

Of course, this also meant every time I returned home to California, I encountered many peers who wanted answers about whether their beliefs about Hawaii were true.

As it turns out, many people believe things about the islands that are simply not accurate.

Here are some of the most common misconceptions people have about Hawaii.

It’s Time to be Realistic about Retirement

From the Kiplinger website

Some people approach retirement strategically with the confidence they will have job security that lasts until their chosen retirement date and enough wealth when the time comes.

These lucky few can look forward to retirement differently than the majority of us. They aren’t being forced to retire at a certain age, but rather they determine what their asset level should be to enjoy a comfortable retirement and concentrate on accumulating sufficient wealth to achieve it. The key to their contentment is having work span flexibility and an understanding of their retirement financial needs, based on a strategic process.

Osteoporosis in Men: Undertreated and Overlooked

From the U.S. News & World Report website

Osteoporosis is generally viewed as a woman’s disease, but men get it, too. While this fragile bone disease is indeed more common in women, there is increasing recognition that it strikes men more frequently than previously believed. Whereas 1 in 2 women will break a bone during their lifetime due to osteoporosis, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 1 in 4 men will have an osteoporosis-related broken bone. In a study in a 2018 issue of the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, researchers screened bone mass in 200 men visiting an endocrine outpatient department at a hospital and found that 40 percent of those over age 55 had low bone mass and 9 percent had osteoporosis.

How to Write a Will That Won’t Trigger a Family Feud

From the Nerd Wallet website

Creating an estate plan is a gift to the people you leave behind. By expressing your wishes, you’re trying to guide your loved ones at a difficult, emotional time.

All too often, though, well-meaning people do things destined to create discord, rancor and resentment among their heirs. What looks good on paper may play out disastrously in real life, says estate and trust attorney Marve Ann Alaimo, partner at Porter Wright Morris & Arthur in Naples, Florida.

“People want to think everybody will be nice and do right,” Alaimo says. “Human nature is not always that way.”

You can reduce the chances of family discord by doing these four things:

Why Exercise and Sleep Are Your Ultimate Defense Against Stress

From the Everyday Health website

Stress is complicated. It’s the result of physiological chemical reactions that take place in our bodies, as well as the intangible emotional responses we have to what’s happening in our lives. In an emergency the body’s stress response can save our lives, yet when our bodies are stressed all the time, it can cause a lot of problems.

And we are struggling when it comes to avoiding that latter outcome.

Two of the solutions we know work (and work consistently) are vexingly simple: get enough rest and get enough exercise.
