CDC: Alzheimer’s, Dementia Rate Expected to Double by 2060

From the U.S. News & World Report website

The share of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias is expected to more than double by 2060 as people increasingly survive into older adulthood, according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

An estimated 5 million older adults had Alzheimer’s or a related dementia in 2014, and by 2060 that figure is expected to rise to 13.9 million, or about 3.3 percent of the U.S. population, according to the report, which evaluated health claims data for more than 28 million Medicare beneficiaries.

Why You Should get a Flu Shot

From the Walgreens website

Extensive research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that the getting the flu vaccine prevents the spread of the flu virus.

What else can the flu shot do for you?

+ Keep you from getting sick with flu.

+ Reduce the risk of flu-associated hospitalization, including among children and older adults.

+ Help protect people with chronic health conditions.

+ Lower rates of some cardiac (heart) complications among people with heart disease.

+ Reduced hospitalizations among people with diabetes and chronic lung disease.

+ Helps protect women during and after pregnancy, and protect a baby after birth from flu.

+ Specifically, moms can pass antibodies, which protect against flu infection, to their babies during pregnancy.

+ And, even if you get the flu after being vaccinated, you may have a milder illness and lower your risk of developing serious health complications.

+ A 2017 study showed that flu vaccination reduced deaths, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, length of stay and overall duration of hospitalization among hospitalized flu patients.

+ Getting vaccinated yourself also protects the people around you, including those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness like babies, young children, older people and people with certain chronic health conditions.

This flu season, make sure you get your flu shot to protect you, your friends, your family and overall public health.

Check Six: Honolulu International Airport – 55+ years ago

From the Kamaaina 56 website | click on photograph to enlarge

This photograph to the Kamaaina56 Flickr site shows what a pilot would. see on approach to Honolulu International Airport’s runways 4L & 4R. The photograph is probably from the early 1960s. Back then, you could drive around the end of the runways to a back gate to Hickam AFB.

In 1977, the contraction of the 12,000 foot reef runway was completed at a cost of $81 million dollars. During the construction, the back gate was closed and runway 4R was extended. Runway 4L remains at its original length.

Barely seen is the old John Rodger terminal on the right of the two parallel runways. The terminal was abandoned when the new Honolulu International Airport – now known was the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport – was opened in the late 1960s. It is identified as one of the busiest airports in the United States, with traffic now exceeding 22 million passengers a year and rising.

Check Six: F-15 IFFC Testing – 37 years ago

In 1981, a late production F-15B (serial number 77-0166) was modified as the test vehicle for the Integrated Flight Fire Control (IFFC)/Firefly III program. The IFFC program was undertaken by McDonnell under a contract from the Air Force for the development of a system which would modify the Eagle’s fire control and flight control systems to accept control inputs from both the pilot and the IFFC flight control system and to tailor flight control response to the various weapons delivery modes. The parallel Firefly III program was conducted by General Electric under an Air Force contract for further development of the fire control system for use against air-to-ground targets.

Off Track: Don’t Worry Be Happy – 30 years ago

“Don’t Worry, Be Happy” is a popular worldwide hit song by musician Bobby McFerrin. Released in September 1988, it became the first a cappella song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a position it held for two weeks. The song’s title is taken from a famous quotation by Meher Baba.

The “instruments” in the a cappella song are entirely overdubbed voice parts and other sounds made by McFerrin, using no instruments at all; McFerrin also sings with an affected accent. The comedic original music video for the song stars McFerrin, Robin Williams, and Bill Irwin, and is considerably shorter than the album version.

For those too young to remember, this became a MTV hit video and the song was heard on radio stations everywhere

Exercise Gema Bhakti 2018

Jarkarta, Indonesia – The Hawaii National Guard and the Tentara Nasional Indonesia (Indonesian Armed Forces) recently hosted a joint staff planning exercise known as Gema Bhakti. The name of the exercise is derived from an Indonesian phrase “Gerakan Bersama Bhakti” meaning move jointly together. The phrase is concatenated to Gema Bhakti.

Gema Bhakti is a joint multi-national staff exercise where military staff from the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and Indonesia work through a process known as the military decision making process. This process is a crucial step that involves the commander’s staff working with higher and lower commands to define the mission, its variables, the situation involved and how to measure mission effectiveness before a plan or order is produced.

This is the 6th iteration of Gema Bhakti which is also a culminating event for three state partnership program subject matter expert exchanges held between the Hawaii National Guard and Tentara Nasional Indonesia through out 2018.
