Times Supermarket supervisor honored with Patriot Award

From the ESGR Hawaii website

L-R: Kary Krohn, Byron Iha and Bridget Komine

MILILANI, Hawaii – Times Supermarket Mililani supervisor Byron Iha received a Department of Defense Patrio Award June 22 in recognition of continued support provided to his employee, Sgt Genavi Pablico, Hawaii Army National Guard. The award was presented by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) volunteers, Bridget Komine and Kary Krohn.

Pablico wrote in her nomination narrative, “He was supportive of any and all Guard duty. He managed to fill in while I was away and not once made me feel bad for my military service. I’ve had past employers who weren’t very supportive, so it was great to have his support. He was even supportive of me being a temporary technician (temporary full-time with the Hawaii Army National Guard) while working there.”

On congratulating Iha Komine stated, “I explained that ESGR is a DOD program with 4,500 volunteers nationwide whose primary purpose it is to encourage cohesive relationships between civilian employers and their employees that serve in the National Guard & Reserve components. Guardsmen & Reservists can’t do what they need to do to perform military service without a solid foundation provided by their families and their employers.  This award is not for a company or a corporation, but for a specific supervisor that provides support. Sgt. Pablico nominated you as a patriotic employer, as a way to thank you for your support of her service.”

Is the Next Recession on Its Way?

From the nextavenue website

Here are two safe forecasts, the kind you can count on. First, the U.S. economy will sink into a recession. Second, no one knows when the recession will arrive. Taken altogether, these two “forecasts” have critical implications for managing your finances.

But first, let’s look at the economy.

Most Seniors Uninformed on Opioid Use

From the Health Day website

A new survey suggests health care professionals are giving short shrift to their older patients when it comes to explaining the risks of opioid painkillers.

Researchers found that most older Americans who are prescribed opioids aren’t advised about the dangers of the drugs, how to use fewer of them, when to use non-opioid alternatives, or what to do with leftover opioids.

Check Six: Old Friends from Maintenance – 14 years ago

This photograph shows two old friends from aircraft maintenance – Kyle Kamikawa and Gerald Gono. It was taken at the November 2004 UTA promotion ceremony for then-Col Peter “Skipper” Pawling.

Kyle and Gerald enlisted in the Hawaii Air National Guard after their high graduation in the late 1960s. Both served in the instrument/electric shop during the F-102 Delta Dagger era. During the F-4 Phantom era, the instrument/auto pilot shop became part of the Avionics Branch and the electric shop remained in the Field Maintenance Branch. They were part of a great maintenance technician force in the 154th Wing.

Kyle and Gerald were great individuals who served for 35+ years before their retirement.

From the USA Today website

Many older Americans who own homes enter retirement looking for ways to cut expenses. And one such place could be their homeowner’s insurance.

Indiscriminate cutting of property and liability coverage would be unwise. After all, a home is in many cases the largest investment a family might have.

So, what then is the best way to go about evaluating coverage and finding ways to cut costs?
