Law School Seminar on Surrogate Decision-Making

The William S. Richardson School of Law will host another seminar on Tuesday, April 10, 2018.  This seminar will focus on surrogate decision-making. This may be of special interest to doctors, lawyers and social workers but consumers may also find it interesting since most patients still do not plan ahead for incapacity with such important documents as advance health care directives and powers of attorney. Review the flyer below for more information.

Check Six: 2001: A Space Odyssey premier – 50 years ago

2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science-fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, partially inspired by Clarke’s short story “The Sentinel“.

The film follows a voyage to Jupiter with the sentient computer Hal after the discovery of a mysterious black monolith affecting human evolution. It deals with the themes of existentialism, human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and extraterrestrial life.

It is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of space flight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery. It uses sound and minimal dialogue in place of traditional narrative techniques; the soundtrack consists of classical music such as Gayane Ballet Suite, The Blue Danube, and Also sprach Zarathustra.

Retirement: 5 tips for people turning 70½, taking a required minimum distribution or RMD

From the USA Today website

Did you turn 70½ last year? While it’s not a classic milestone, like 18, 21 or 65, it comes with its own rewards and responsibilities.

According to the IRS, the year you turn 70½ is when you must begin withdrawing funds from a retirement account, even if you don’t need the money yet. This withdrawal is called a required minimum distribution, or RMD.

Off Track: Load up on Tabasco Sauce Now

From the Travel Land Leisure website

From extreme temperature gains and drops to rising sea levels, man’s destruction of our one and only planet is starting to take its toll. And casualties could soon include our supply of Tabasco sauce.

You see, Tabasco’s home lies in the Louisiana marsh, on a small stretch of land known as Avery Island. There, the first pepper used to make the tangy and strong sauce was found growing next to a chicken coop.

Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) Update. We need to keep monitoring the ongoing debate about commissaries. Currently taxpayers pay more than a $1.4 billion a year to subsidize commissaries. Congress wants to make the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) self-supporting or have minimal Federal support.

The DeCA has already introduced store brands that reduce costs. Quoting their February 22, 2018 press release, “Commissary store brands are becoming a larger portion of the store inventory with the latest addition of private label products.” Read the press release for more information about store brands.

There will be more commissary / exchange joint sales events. DeCA’s March 8, 2018 press release had more detailed information. There has been unofficial talk about merging the commissary and exchanges systems. Imagine more locations like the Fort Shafter exchange with an expanded food availability.

A Public Radio International (PRI) article mentioned two other options. One is to privatize the commissary system. The other is to close commissaries and give beneficiaries a monetary payment.

We continue to monitor this on-going dialogue about commissaries.

DoD watchdog: Air Force failed to effectively manage F-22 modernization

From the Defense News website

The U.S. Air Force ineffectively managed the stealthy F-22 Raptor’s modernization program, putting America’s air superiority at risk, the DoD Inspector General found in a new report.

The F-22 program office failed to generate an appropriate contracting strategy, which led to delays and a final product that may not deliver “modernized capabilities necessary to sustain air superiority against rapidly evolving U.S. adversaries,” according to the report published Monday.

Check Six – 2008: Aloha Flight 261

Aloha Airlines was a Hawaiian airline headquartered in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, operating from a hub at Honolulu International Airport. Operations began on July 26, 1946, and ceased on March 31, 2008.

A sad day for all 1900 of Aloha’s employees. Many Hawaii National Guard members – including many Air Guard pilots – lost their jobs and retirements due to the closure.

Darryll Wong, the future Adjutant General, was Aloha’s Chief Pilot and was asked to take the last flight after he arrived at Honolulu Airport to join his co-workers. In the interview in the Hawaii News Now video, you will notice he is wearing an aloha shirt, not his Aloha Airlines uniform.

If the other pilot interviewed looks a little familiar, Trisha Kobashigawa was a news reported for KITV before starting at Aloha Airlines. She was Aloha’s newest pilot. Trisha now flies for Hawaiian Air.
