Flu Shots for Seniors

From the Huffington Post website

There are actually two different flu shots – the Fluzone High Dose and FLUAD – that are designed specifically for people age 65 and older (you only need to get one of them).

These FDA approved vaccines are designed to offer extra protection beyond what a standard flu shot provides, which is important for older adults who have weaker immune defenses and have a great risk of developing dangerous flu complications.

The Charles Dick Medal of Merit was established in 1988 and is designed to recognize the contributions to the National Guard by elected representatives to legislative bodies at the state and national levels.  The medal is named in honor of Major General Charles Dick, NGAUS president from 1902 to 1909, a major general in the Ohio National Guard, a Congressman and later a Senator. Dick was responsible for the passage of the Dick Acts of 1903 and 1908 that established the foundation of the modern National Guard.

Steer Clear of These 9 Artery and Vein Diseases

From the everyday Health website

Many diseases of the arteries and veins cause no symptoms until a potentially deadly problem like a heart attack or stroke develops. Arteries pump oxygen-rich blood from your heart to the rest of your body, and veins return the blood to your lungs to receive oxygen. Both types of vessels are vital to the circulation of blood throughout your body.

Understanding the health threats that can affect your arteries and veins, including blood clots, high cholesterol, and plaque buildup, will help you protect your health. Read on to learn about risks and preventive tips for each of these conditions.

Taps: Lawrence Chaves Cabrinha Update

Lawrence Chaves Cabrinha graduated from St Louis High School in 1953. In 1954, he joined the US Air Force and was accepted into the Undergraduate Pilot Training program as an Aviation Cadet and started Pre-Flight Training at Lackland Air Force Base later that year. He graduated from Williams Air Force Base as a pilot and a Second Lieutenant in 1955.

On July 4, 1955, he married the former Ruth Calistro and began their wonderful life together. Lieutenant Cabrinha, with his new wife in tow, then reported to Strategic Air Command as a B-47 pilot with the 98th Bomb Wing at Lincoln Air Force Base, Nebraska. He served with the 98th Bomb Wing for four years and was discharged from the US Air Force in 1959.

He then was hired by Aloha Airlines as a pilot. In the years to come, he served the company as pilot on the line, an Instructor pilot, Chief Pilot, Director of Operations and was then selected to serve as the President of Aloha Island Air. He improved operations and efficiency and was responsible for many positive actions taken within the company.

Concurrently, he joined the Hawaii Air National Guard in 1960 and was assigned as a fighter pilot in the 199th Fighter Squadron where he flew the F-102A, the F-4C and the F-15 Eagle.

In 1969, He volunteered for service in Vietnam during the Vietnam War as a pilot assigned to the 64th Fighter Squadron and served from bases in Vietnam and Thailand. In 1978, he was selected as Commander of the 199th Fighter Squadron where he, his pilots and Weapon System operators, participated in many deployments and made tremendous improvements to their combat capability.

He was then selected to serve as the Director of Operations for the Hawaii Air National Guard where he worked with the staff in developing a strategic plan for the unit that incorporated new missions and roles for the Hawaii Air National Guard that are in existence today. He retired from the Hawaii Air National Guard in 1995.

In his earlier years, he enjoyed motorcycling, golfing, fishing, racquetball and was an avid reader. Cabby, as he was affectionately called, was an outstanding military and civilian leader. Quiet, but effective, and someone who was liked by everyone. He was good at his job, a loving husband and a great role model for his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Ann, children Debra Stephenson, Monica (Jacob) Cobb-Adams , David (Peggy) Cabrinha and Peter (Lisa) Cabrinha , 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

myPay Delivery Selections

Webmaster Comments: Most military retirees should have received the following email this week.

Your current account settings have some of your documents delivered electronically and others sent via mail.  While these may reflect your true intentions, we urge you to review your selections to ensure you know how we will provide your vital information.

An informal survey of some myPay users reveals that many are unaware of their document delivery selections, like yourself, have some set for hardcopy mail and others for electronic delivery via their myPay accounts.

More and more retirees are finding the convenience and security of receiving tax and pay statements, as well as important correspondence via myPay, a better option than having them sent via mail.  Not only are they available immediately, they’re there whenever the need arises.

Please don’t delay.  Changes to your 1099R delivery options will not be accepted after November 14 to end-of-year processing; and 1095 form (IRS Form 1095 Healthcare Verification), delivery changes must be made on or before end December 31.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.

During its heyday, the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle was the pinnacle of U.S. air superiority, incorporating advanced technology and a forward-thinking design that created a highly-maneuverable multi-role fighter aircraft.

The F-15 was born out of necessity, as the Vietnam War demonstrated the Air Force’s need for a new fighter aircraft with the power and agility to overcome any current or projected Soviet threat.

How the 2018 TRICARE Changes Impact Tricare for Life Users

From the Military.com website

Almost all types of TRICARE coverage will face sweeping changes, upgrades and reforms in 2018 resulting from legislation passed last year and a contractor changeover.

The only part of TRICARE that won’t be dramatically impacted is Tricare for Life.

That’s because TRICARE for Life, used by military retirees over age 65, isn’t like the Defense Health Agency’s other plans. Rather than provide stand-alone comprehensive coverage, TRICARE for Life pairs with Medicare Part B as wrap-around coverage.
