Cabrinha Services: The services for Lawrence “Cabby” Cabrinha remain in the planning stage. Retiree News will post this information when it becomes available.

High School Postings: Retiree News has received a lot of positive feedback about the series about local high schools. So far, there were posts about Roosevelt, McKinley, and Hilo. There are several more coming up in the next few months.

But it should be noted there will not be posts for all high schools. We have already received comments about when certain high schools will post. The Images of Old Hawaii website, run by Peter Young, has featured high schools with historical ties to Hawaii’s history.

But rest assured that the Punahou, Kamehameha and St. Louis are coming – seems there is a lot of interest in those three schools for some reason.

Check Six – 1962: The Supply Building Construction

This photograph shows the supply building being constructed. The timeframe is 1962-1963, shortly after the construction of the fighter hanger.

The paved parking lot is behind the building. The current support facility was constructed over the parking lot in the 1990s. There is no fence line and the stream between the building and the parking lot is barely visible in the photograph. The stream was covered over during the construction of the support facility building.

Further back in the photograph, there is heavy brush where the current operations facility is today. The building was built around 1970 and housed the 201st Mobile Communications Squadron, which later became the 201st Combat Communications Group. The 201 CCG was deactivated in 2013.

The Staggering Prices of Long-Term Care 2017

From the nextavenue website

The cost of long-term care just keeps going up and most Americans keep believing — incorrectly — that the government will cover most or all of it.

Those are the findings of a new report, the Genworth 2017 Cost of Care Survey, released today by Genworth Financial.

“Our population is aging, living longer, and not prepared,” said David O’Leary, president and CEO of Genworth’s US Life division. (Genworth is a provider of long-term care insurance, among other products.) He said the company hopes that its annual survey will help people start planning for their long-term care needs.

Governor David Y. Ige and Hawaii National Guard leadership saw off the flight crews and maintenance personnel at Hickam Field. “Puerto Rico is suffering through a disaster of epic proportions. The C-17 crew has been tasked with flying first to Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington State, where they will pick up relief supplies and additional personnel before heading to Puerto Rico. Off Track: Hilo High School

In Hawaii, what high school you graduated from is often among the questions asked when you first meet someone. Public versus private, old versus new, town versus county, island versus island – some high school rivalries continue well into graduates’ old age.

The Images of Old Hawaii website periodically publishes articles about various high schools around the state. We will post links about these Hawaii high schools on their website.

For a while, other than church-related schools, if a Big Island youngster wanted to pursue his education beyond the eighth grade, he had to travel to O‘ahu. There he would board and go to school.
