Off Track: July 1 is Bobby Bonilla Day

From the ESPN website

Seventeen years ago, the New York Mets agreed to defer what they owed their fading slugger Bobby Bonilla.

Mets equated $5.9 million they owed Bonilla in 2000 to $1.1 million per year from 2011 to 2035 at 8% annual interest rate. In the process, Bonilla avoided New York state income tax and now lives in Florida with no state income tax.

Off Track: Downhill Mountain Biking

See firsthand what it’s like to rip down one of the heaviest downhill mountain bike tracks ever created, through the GoPro view of the creator himself, Dan Atherton. It’s why Red Bull Hardline is an event like no other. The long and technical course plays on a variety of disciplines, where incredibly steep and rocky technical sections were combined with a motocross run in and 50-foot [15.24 meters] gap jump.

Since its first flight in 1954, the Hercules has been everywhere and done just about anything. Aircrews have flown it to both poles, landed or airdropped military supplies to hot spots from Vietnam to Afghanistan and performed countless relief operations around the globe.

The Hercules has been used to drop bombs, retrieve satellites in midair, conduct reconnaissance and attack ground targets with cannons. Some models are flown as commercial transports. The C-130 has the longest, continuous military aircraft production run in history and one of the top three longest, continuous aircraft production lines of any type.

Check Six: Old Friends – 40+ years ago

This photograph shows Delos Chow and his wife Judy, with Walter Nishihara in the middle.

In the early 1970s, the then 201st Mobile Communications Squadron hosted an annual luau. These luau were fun events for a young squadron that started in 1967. The squadron expanded and later became the 201st Combat Communications Group in 1975.

Delos served as a power production technician and retired as a senior master sergeant. He passed away in 2005 at age 60. His wife Linda passed away last summer.

Nishi was the automotive maintenance supervisor and retired as a master sergeant. He passed away last October.

Delos and Nishi were great individuals who were key members of the squadron in the early days.

Thanks for Bob Finley and Calvin Chow, Delos’ brother, who also served in the 201st, for the photo identifications.

Iraq Vets Are Becoming Terminally Ill and Burn Pits May Be To Blame

From the Task and Purpose website

The Iraq War killed former Minnesota Air National Guard Tech Sgt. Amie Muller. It just took a decade to do it.

That, at least, is how Muller’s family and friends see it. The 36-year-old’s pancreatic cancer, they believe, was caused by exposure to the massive burn pit used to dispose of waste at Joint Base Balad, 40 miles north of Baghdad. Her doctors said there was a strong possibility the burn pit was to blame, but no way to definitively prove a link with the available evidence.

Regardless, a young mother of three died in February from a disease that typically is diagnosed at age 71.

Off Track: 7 things to do before you leave on a cruise

From the Samantha Brown website

So you’re going on a cruise (or maybe just thinking about it). People say they choose to cruise because it is so effortless. You only have to unpack once, there’s a clean bathroom every twenty feet and those frozen tropical drinks with towering fruit garnishes are practically handed to you.

But that doesn’t mean a cruise doesn’t take some serious planning and the ease and relaxation you experience while on a cruise is only equal to the work and research you do before it.

Here are 7 things you should do before you leave on a cruise.
